Joanna Marie (joannacapats) Hi friends,

So my friend in the US told me he's going to send me a Nook (I'll be receiving it soon) and since I already have my Kindle4, I decided I'm going to use it for graphic novels or audiobooks.

If you love audiobooks, I would appreciate your audiobook suggestions! :)

PS. This will also help those who wanted to try audiobooks for themselves! Thanks for your suggestions!

Cheers.

Interesting - I didn't care for Days of Blood & Starlight. I didn't try the sequel because I abandoned it. I'm not sure if it was the narrator or the story - I'm more of a dystopia girl and not into "creatures." But I agree wholeheartedly about Shatter Me (Shatter Me, #1) by Tahereh Mafi and the sequel Unravel Me (Shatter Me, #2) by Tahereh Mafi .

and almost anything narrated by Jenna Lamia.

Believe it or not, Einstein His Life and Universe by Walter Isaacson narrated by Edward Herrmann was the one that got me addicted to audio!

message 19: by Jen (last edited Apr 10, 2013 06:21AM) (new)

Jen (jenwesner) | 1222 comments Some of the books I've tried are horrible on audio. Here are a few to avoid:

Altered (Altered, #1) by Jennifer Rush Obsidian (Lux, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout Ultraviolet (Ultraviolet, #1) by R.J. Anderson Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

Some books are just better read in print. Two of those above are narrated by Justine Eyre, who is a good narrator but just not for those books. She has that upper-class New England kind of whine to her voice. Tolerable but not appropriate for most YA. Just my opinion --

I'd LOVE to hear more about narrators from you all! I'm always interested in those narrators that should not be missed and the ones that should be avoided at all costs!

It was incredible. Tucker's voice is spot on, and so is Clara's. And Samjeeza's, and Angela's -- ok, I admit I just finished a gushing review of Boundless . . .

DeAnna (dee84812) | 671 comments Aw, I kinda wish I had tried it yet. I loved the narrator for the Soul Screamers series. She did great voices. I liked the narrator for Bloodlines, but a few of her voices bugged me.

I see you are also a Sarah and Jenna fan (Shiver- Delirium)!! They are awesome. I liked the narration of Every Day and Adoration of Jenna Fox more than the actual books (that happens) but they are both worth the read/listen IMO.

Jen (jenwesner) | 1222 comments Heidi (trust me) wrote: "I liked the narration of Daughter of Smoke & Bone more than the book - like I said above that happens to me a lot!"

OK, ok, I'll give it another try : ) I also was not a fan of the narration in Under the Never Sky (Under the Never Sky, #1) by Veronica Rossi . But after everyone saying that the story was so good, I gave it another listen and was able to get past the narrator. Everyone was right, the story is good. Not my absolute favorite, but I think that's because I think Perry should have a different voice.

I am a TOTAL fan of Sarah and Jenna. They definitely improve the story, and I agree with you about Every Day and Jenna Fox. Sam and Grace (Mercy Falls) are ever in my heart because of Jenna Lamia.

Heather Lind, who narrates Blood Red Road (Dust Lands, #1) by Moira Young , gives Saba a wonderful voice.

I am SO much slower to read a book in print, so the Gone (Gone, #1) by Michael Grant series will be awhile for me. I also want Onyx (Lux, #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout , but will have to have that in print because Justine Eyre narrates it and I don't like her at all.

Thanks for the recommendation for Soul Screamers. I've heard several people mention it, and I think I may have to try it.

Also just finished Scarlet (Lunar Chronicles, #2) by Marissa Meyer , and I have to say that Rebecca Soler did a whole slew of accents - all really well!

How do you read so many, Jen and Heidi? Do you listen while driving? Do you have long commutes? I barely have any time to listen. I like to read because I can get through books so much faster. I do have to have at least one book always available on audio and start it up the minute I get out of bed until I sit down to work. And lately I've been setting the timer and will listen to 15 or 30 minutes before falling asleep. But I can only listen if I'm doing something mindless like making coffee, taking a bath, and sometimes if I play a video game. I am without a doubt addicted now, and never listen to the radio while driving my short little distances! :-)

I'm excited to get my copy of Ready Player One by Ernest Cline just for Will Wheaton! Ha aha...

And I just got Linger (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #2) by Maggie Stiefvater back from my elibrary! Yay! I really like Jenna Lamia too! I like Sarah Drew too so need to find more books by both of them!

Heidi | 2372 comments Karen I am an audio junkie - I seriously probably need help. Here is how/when I listen.

1. I have my sansa connected to my CD player in the bathroom so I can hear it through the speaker and listen to audiobooks while I shower and get dressed.

2. I have audiobooks on both my cell phone and ipod touch so while I am straightening my hair/getting ready I switch to another audiobook and listen on one of them.

3. In the car to and from work I listen to either CD's from the library or listen on my cell phone through the speaker to yet another audiobook.

4. While I am cooking or cleaning I listen

5. While I am doing yard work I listen

6. While I go for walks I listen

7. And sometimes I even listen while grocery shopping with my ear buds :)

I am crazy for audio what can I say??

message 36: by Jen (new)

Jen (jenwesner) | 1222 comments Karen I'm like Heidi. But I can do it all the time because I'm mostly alone through the day. I'm flipping a house and doing major "cosmetic surgery" so I have lots of time to listen. I keep my books on my iPod, although I do have an iPhone. The iPod is big enough to hold several books, so I've dedicated it to them. I walk around all day with earbuds, so when I do have to talk to people I generally irritate them because I can't hear them and they have to repeat themselves. Lol! I also got a little portable speaker for my iPod so I don't always need the buds. I set the timer on the iPod at night so I can hear while I'm falling asleep (although inevitably I have to back at least a chapter the next day to get what I missed). I have one those cassette adapters for the car, so I listen while I'm driving. I put it on the portable speaker when I'm getting dressed or doing my hair. So basically, I'm listening ALL THE TIME. I've even investigated getting waterproof earbuds for when I swim laps, since my iPhone has a Lifeproof waterproof cover and lap swimming is pretty boring.

I also sew as a hobby, although my studio is currently in storage. I listen while I work there. Currently when I look at the things in my house like flooring, baseboards, paint, etc. I associate them with a book. So when I look at my countertops now, I see Unearthly. Crazy, I know.

So when Heidi and I say addiction, we truly are not kidding. That's how we get through so many books - it only takes a day or day-and-a-half to get through a book. Addiction, commitment - it's all semantics. At least it's not drugs, alcohol or caffeine! Ok, well, not drugs or alcohol : )

message 37: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 2372 comments Jen I forgot about listening before bed - I do that too! I put the sleep timer on and listen until I fall asleep :)

You two are hilarious!!! Love it! I did try to listen while grocery shopping last week. Haven't figured out the shower trick yet. But I notice I'm logging more time per week so I'm catching on to a few more tricks. ;-D

Jen (jenwesner) | 1222 comments Recommendation update: Jennifer Ehle who narrates Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1) by Cassandra Clare is less than stellar. She's ok, and although she's not British, her accents are passable. It's the action sequences where she falls short. Everything is pretty much the same. And I detest it when a narrator does a fake scream - just back away from the microphone and do a real scream already! That's where Sarah Drew is so good. She brings that emotion whereas so many narrators just read. They might read with feeling, as does Jennifer Ehle - but that's not the same as a voice actor who really "acts" the book for you.

I think Jennifer Ehle would read something else very well. She just wasn't good for Clockwork Angel. I would read it in print. But the rest of the series of Infernal Devices ( Clockwork Prince (The Infernal Devices, #2) by Cassandra Clare and Clockwork Princess (The Infernal Devices, #3) by Cassandra Clare are both narrated by other people, two of those being men who are actually British and also Heather Lind, who did Blood Red Road (Dust Lands, #1) by Moira Young and Rebel Heart (Dust Lands, #2) by Moira Young . I haven't actually listened to those yet, but I think they hold much greater promise.

Alana ~ The Book Pimp (loonyalana) | 295 comments I don't remember if someone already mentioned it, but I listened to Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna, #1) by Kendare Blake and it wasn't half bad. I've only listened to two audio books so far so I don't have much to compare it to, but I enjoyed it and it was (mostly) able to hold my attention without wandering too badly

Gabby Hey, random question, how do people listen to audiobooks these days? When I was a kid we had CDs or cassette tape or something, and I assume that's not how people listen to them... Also. How would you swap them in like book swaps if they were on your iPod or kindle...

I don't think I'm making much sense here, lol :)

You can download them as mp3 or wma files, usually from your library or from Audible.com. Then you can play them on anything that will play that kind of file. Libraries also often have CD's or "Playaways," which are little mp3 players that you can hang around your neck, plug your earbuds in, and listen.

You can't really swap them unless you own them. In that case, you just transfer the mp3 or wma file to the person with whom you're sharing.

Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor was the audio that that made me love audiobooks. Zuzana's accent was amazing! Followed soon after by The Raven Boys! Will Patton did girl voices well I thought! I think that's why Lisbeth's voice in The Girl Who Played with Fire is annoying me. Hehehe...
