Hey I watched the trailer. It's the comedy series, right? I'm not that sold with it. I'm just curious though, is he really a psychic or he's just joking around? I mean he kind of looks dumb or he's just playing dumb? And I don't mean to offend in anyway.
I'd give it a shot this weekend. :) good choice on the Mentalist. ;) I watch that series to and I love it! :)

Um, he just pretends to be a psychic at one stage and then runs with it because he faces criminal charges otherwise. Yeah, it's a funnier take on Sherlock Holmes, but essentially the exact same. It's all about people and how we are, and the very simple, enlightening deductions to be made about us that most people fail completely to notice. And it's much, much more intelligent than Elementary in those regards. Trust me. And as is The Mentalist and Sherlock for that matter. Wow, I hate Elementary :P

I've never heard of this before. It sounds interesting. And you're right, Sherlock Holmes has morphed a lot. I'm just not interested enough in Elementary. I don't have enough motivation. Sherlock all the way. :D
You should really watch it, it's so much fun!!

Hmm. Seems interesting. I'll give it a try this weekend. :) I'll let you know how I find it.

I watch Psych. I like it. But I'm hesitant to make the connection between Sherlock and Shawn. Both are incredibly talented and logical men, but where Sherlock was wise and methodical, Shawn is reckless, child-like, and also quite young. Though Shawn's skills might be based off Sherlock, I doubt he was supposed to embody Sherlock or such.

Yeah, Shawn was to put his own modern slant on the great Mr. Holmes, of course. But he's still a Holmes. As I've said, all the modern-day Holmes are a far cry from their parent, to introduce some writer's own personal flair. But they are supposed to embody the original because they keep Holmes' name? And so they share his immortality, his spotlight, and Psych gets swept under the red carpet? Seems unjust.
Eh, but maybe I just have a little something too much against Holmes. I actually think Doyle's availing himself of Poe's character was done in a rather undignified manner :P And so perhaps there is no immortal Holmes there for me as there is for others. Say, I wouldn't speak about him as if a first love as you have, Robin.

I am a huge Psych fan and I have watched it religiously since the day it started simply because it reminded me of such a huge parody of the Holmes dynamic. I agree that Shawn is a far cry from Holmes, but at the same time the show's writes are really big on parody. Anyone who has watched it can defiantly pick up on the pop culture references and the tendency for every episode to have references to something else in the name of humor. I feel like that's more what it's about is taking the dynamic of Watson and Holmes and Watson and making it funny. I don't know if it makes sense to you guys, but I have always liked the Holmes-Watson relationship and found it funny. I think Psych is trying to capitalize on that vs. trying to be an actual manifestation of the characters. <3 Audra
I wouldn't say Psych is "swept under the red carpet" at all, actually. It's quite popular, and though many aren't likely to make the connection between Holmes and Shawn, I'm not sure that's a huge deal. Really, television is for person interpretation and pure enjoyment. What it is based off makes very little difference. :) And I'm sure that if the writers had wanted more of said "Spotlight" due to Holmes' name, they would've used his name. Instead, they decided to create something new. Also, with using the name "Holmes", one approaches risks. Take Elementary for example. Done poorly, or in mediocrity, a show that is clearly a spin off of Holmes gets very much criticism and people are very hesitant to accept new ideas, such as Watson being a woman. So with the spotlight comes risks, and with Elementary, some downfall, as well.I agree very much with what Audra said, as well. I like that sentence "Psych is trying to capitalize on that vs. trying to be an actual manifestation of the characters".
As for me speaking of Holmes "as if a first love", I accept this openly. Holmes was solace for me when I was more observant and less social than my friends. More interested in knowledge than boys. You know. He helped me through the roughest patches, including when I realized I had OCD. And so yes. Holmes is a bit of a first love for me. ;)
I agree with you Robin (and thanks for sharing your personal experiences) that it is very difficult to make a reference to Holmes without it sounding cliché, and Elementary is a prime example of that. I also first fell in love with the Sherlock Holmes series when I was young and people didn't quite understand the things I did/saw/experienced. Even now I have issues with people around me not being able to see the same things that I'm seeing in a situation and having to explain it away. In Psych I see some suggestive correlations between Holmes and Shawn as in they are both at their best when they are on a case. I think that the new Holmes movies (Robert Downey Jr.) plays the dynamic of Holmes and Watson's relationship out perfectly well, and in a lot of ways the humor is exaggerated. I feel that Psych is taking that type of exaggeration to another level to create something different, not quite original but quirky enough for viewers to keep interest. 7 Seasons strong can't be that bad;)

I wholeheartedly agree about the RDJ movies. I really want to check out Psyche, as it seems to spark quite a debate and I'd like to see what I think of it.

Perfect, Robin dear. I feel the same way. But I don't really have a meaningful reason for getting in to Sherlock Holmes. I just kinda did, and then I fell in love with the stories and Watson and Holmes and everything. I have always admired those who think differently than others. People who see the world differently. Holmes is an example of that. He is brilliant, because he sees from a perspective no one else does. I love people like that. They're very rare, and ACD definitely captured it.

It's definitely somewhat swept underneath the red carpet I think. Robin, you just want to disagree with me over that Harry Potter thread :3 But of course it was to be expected and wasn't that big a deal, etc. I'm just not so huge a Holmes fan as a fan of the genre and am giving Psych it's due consideration.
Audra, I watch it on the internet mostly.
Both of you, you two should read Games People Play. There's a book for people who feel like they're seeing more in situations than others are.

New episode in a few hours!! :3
You really, really should read that book, too. Or, at least, I think :D

Wait. Hate to drive this conversation in a weird direction, but what Harry Potter thread...? Because I have no idea what you're talking about. *Stands awkwardly*

Haha liar
Haha liar
Sweet, Jessica!Uh. I'm not gonna push this because it's weird for me, and I'm sure it VERY weird for everyone else reading this, but I am lot of things, but a liar is not one of them. I would tell you if I was just arguing to argue, dude.
I find overly structured sentiment most often false. :D
lol
lol
I am wondering why you called Robin a liar. I didn't see anything that could be considered false in that paragraph.
Emmm okay I'm pretty sure there is no Harry Potter thread in this group and I have no idea what you're talking about.
Kingkiller, please lower it down a notch. Please be nice to all our members, because it seems as if you are offending people. If you continue to do so, I will kick you out of the group, and it is as simple as that. Thank you.

Oh, c'mon dude. You're being obnoxious here. Mel is merely doing her job, which she wouldn't have to do if you weren't being a weirdo.
Indeed, derogate by whatever means those intellects that threaten yours. If someone is a troll, I'll call them a troll. "Lapin" was clearly meant in offense or was just retarded. And I took it as such. This was a crime? Get real. And Robin I mistook you for someone else. Get over it.
Good job, Mel!! No sorry I'm not being sincere lol

Sweetie, I have no issue with you. Except for the fact that you're treating my friend poorly. It has nothing to do with what went on excluding how you handled the situation.
Id have to say, at best, Psych is a parody of Sherlock Holmes. The characters, especially Shawn, are so outlandish, but still have similar characteristics to the Holmes canon. Shawn uses his attention for detail to solve crimes in a way that seems impossible to others. Gus is definitely a Watson-esque character. He works in a medical field, sort of, but still helps Shawn solve most of the cases. And you could expand the comparison by saying the chief is Lestrade and Henry takes the Mycroft role. Of course the writers took some artistic liberties with the characters to make them different. After all seeing the same interpretation gets boring after awhile, and the originals aren't really written to be comedies. So there are similarities, but I don't really think that's the point of the show.Ps. Psych actually got me interested in Sherlock Holmes. If I hadn't watched Psych I doubt I would have given Sherlock a second thought. Psych really got me into the whole, paying attention to small details to figure out the bigger picture story line. So I definitely recommend this show to anyone, and I've managed to get my one friend to watch it lol. So looking forward to the
Musical :D

Guys, look. James Roday is the sleuth we know and love. It's silly to not include him amongst the Holmes just because he uses a different name. Such superficiality!! (and I mean the Watson in Elementary is a woman for God's sake...)
Just. Seriously, guys. Watch it. And then thank me for a raucously good time.
Burton Guster makes a way better Watson than Watson. And he's black, lol! Now that's keeping your media relevant :D
(Yeah, there wasn't much structure to this post. But I made it quick because there's a new episode of Psych out I must go watch :D)
PS, Elementary is awful. Psych, Sherlock, and The Mentalist (on its good days) own!
