It's time to fill our shelves with great recommendations from our readers. Please recommend your all-time favorite Action/Adventure book, and we'll put it on our book shelves. Please only recommend one (1) book or the first book of one (1) series. No one may recommend their own book. To make your recommendation count, look at other recommendations to make sure you aren't recommending something that's already been recommended. Remember, your recommendation will go on our reading shelves. Thanks, and we look forward to seeing our shelves grow with your favorite Action/Adventure reads.

Lauren Lynne (laurenlynne) | 6 comments I'm a fan of Alex Rider and Percy Jackson. My new addiction is The Charlie Sullivan and the Monster Hunters series by D.C. and C. Michael McGannon. Book one is The Vorcolac's Diary. This is a YA series and a fun read with lots of action.Charlie Sullivan and the Monster Hunters: The Varcolac's Diary

My fave has to be Christopher Paolini's Inheritance cycle for YA, the first book is Eragon. A fascinating world, fully-rendered.

Glenn Soucy (gsoucy) | 37 comments I'll say Percy Jackson series is a great and fun read. If you like wordy books with long paragraphs, but a good story, then Eragon is great too.

Angel (angel4sue) | 4 comments hi Angel here. I am thinking "The Dragon Keeper"
by Robin Hobb. I just finished the 4th and final book of the series and really Loved it. I also saw Yvette nominated "Eragon" which is also a very good book. The Dragon Keeper (Rain Wild Chronicles, #1) by Robin Hobb

The Hunt For Atlantis (Nina Wilde & Eddie Chase, #1) by Andy McDermott

One of the best action/adventure novels I have ever read. Really needs to be a film.

Ryan | 2 comments Hi there,

I'm recommending "The Whip" by Karen Kondazian. This is a character-driven action/adventure inspired by the true-story of well-known stagecoach driver, Charlotte "Charley" Parkhurst (1812-1879). Charlotte dressed as a man in the old west to track the man that killed her family. Lots of great, cinematic shootouts and cross-country adventure set within California's gold rush period. The Whip

Anthony Land (goodreadscomanthony_land) | 2 comments

Robert Heinlein's GLORY ROAD.

Glory Road by Robert A. Heinlein

For sheer swashbuckling fun and grand storytelling, I can't think of a better choice.

t'irla ~The Bookslayer~ aka Barbara (tirla) Hawke (Alexander Hawke #1) by Ted Bell Love this whole series Alexander Hawke totally recommend it

message 15: by Simon (new)

Simon Okill (tassyoneill) | 52 comments My fave has to be The Ian Fleming Files: Operation Armada by Damian Stevenson - http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I...

Olivia "So many books--so little time."" | 9 comments A good action-filled book I read recently is Panic by Jeff Abbott. Thye protagonist, Evan, is summoned to her home in Austin by his mother and when he arrives finds that she has been murdered. Then a couple of men try to kill him. And that's only the beginning.

message 17: by Erich (new)

Erich Penhoff | 133 comments LOL...true we all want to run to a Banana Republic, but we are keeping the backdoor open for a quick return. Expats are the crème de la crème in places like Morocco or Grand Canary Island. Jamaica and Turks and Caicos are fine and next door. I lived in a few Banana Republics, San Salvador & Nicaragua. But ask any of the latest Whistleblowers where they would like to be....not in a Banana Republic.....

message 18: by Lilian (new)

Lilian (lilianjgardner) I recommend all books written by Wilbur Smith. They are action packed, filled with historical and geographical value, and difficult to put down.

message 19: by Erich (new)

Erich Penhoff | 133 comments Yes Wilbur Smith...during a RR in, when it still was Rhodesia, he appeared out of nowhere in our hotel, he wrote a story for a South African Paper about the pending revolution and the coming bloodbath. He has a great understanding of the lost tribal cultures and beauty of Africa. He also was known for his womanizing and now his five wives. LOL but I guess great writers must have more than one. Wilbur Smith, Ernest Miller Hemingway and Salman Rushdie all did and do..LOL.

message 20: by Lilian (new)

Lilian (lilianjgardner) He's a great story teller, and I like his style of composition, which makes for interesting and yet 'smooth' reading.
I didn't know about the 'other stuff', but I'm certain there are many men who have the same desires. I didn't know about his five wives either. That's a lot of expense! LOL.

I recommend the books written by H.G. Wells, Jules Verne and Edgar Rice Burroughs. Their use of the English language is amazing.

Travis Starnes Anthony wrote: "Robert Heinlein's GLORY ROAD.Glory Road by Robert A. HeinleinFor sheer swashbuckling fun and grand storytelling, I can't think of a better choice."

Not enough people know about this book. It is a great adventure tale and I would put it up against any of the modern stuff coming out. People my age and older (say 30+) seem to be conversant in Heinlein, but I feel like younger generations have missed his genius (and weirdness in his later years).

Glory road was an amazing book.

message 23: by Travis (new)

Travis Starnes For me, any of the Jack Reacher novels does it for me. Great adventure and a hero I can get behind. I reread them all the time.

Travis, can you recommend a particular book for Jack Reacher as Glory Road already recommended an up there?

Uploaded to here!

If you haven't recommended a book for MGR's action/adventure bookshelf here is the place to do so. Please recommend the first book for a series.

message 26: by Travis (new)

Travis Starnes Sure. Sorry about that, wasn't thinking. The first book is probably the best, its called

Killing Floor Killing Floor (Jack Reacher, #1) by Lee Child . It has a really good mystery plus some great action scene. It also gives us a good intro into the character.

Also you could go with the one they adapted into the movie with Tom Cruise, it was One Shot One Shot (Jack Reacher, #9) by Lee Child . It works pretty well stand alone and doesn't require you to read the previous books.

Got it and uploaded, Travis, thanks!

Travis Starnes Ohh, being new here I didn't know what you meant by uploaded. I will make sure to put recommendations up the the bookshelf from now on.

Ah, I can only put your first choice up on the bookshelf from any recommendation list. Each genre has its own one which you have found for Action/Adventure. The mods upload the books to the bookshelves. We're still building it up. It's nice to keep the recommendation threads to one only so the bookshelf gets a balance across all tastes. But it might be good to find other ways to get recommendations made.

message 30: by Travis (new)

Travis Starnes That makes sense, good call

A.D. Starrling (adstarrling) | 45 comments Dark Rivers of the Heart by Dean Koontz. I recently struggled to find a good print version of this book after someone "borrowed" my first one and never gave it back! Though I haven't been a huge fan of his latest works, this is one of his books that still haunts me. I mean, even the DOG is a well developed character! Dark Rivers of the Heart

So few for this genre! I'm recommending the first of Dirk Pitt series by Clive Cussler. I devoured those books one by one in my twenties and whenever I think action/adventure those books spring to mind.

So Pacific Vortex! (Dirk Pitt, #1) by Clive Cussler

Uploaded to here. :)

message 34: by Renwick (new)

Renwick Hester | 5 comments I would highly recommend Clive Cussler's Isaac Bell series beginning with The Chase. I'm an avid fan of Dirk Pitt and Kirk Austin, his other series. Also, Yes Hunt For Atlantis is good. I'd recommend James Rollins Sigma series. Good reading.

Have to agree. It's awful and strays wildly from the book.
