Kristina (spaz_girl) Here is where we can discuss Elantris by Brandon Sanderson chapters 16-22.
DO NOT post any spoilers from further along in the book, this is just for chapters 16-22. Discussing events from these chapters and previous ones though is perfectly fine.

Becky (beaktastic) | 86 comments Just finished chapter 16. Raoden obviously would have been a good king and I do hope he gets a good chance to change Elantris, although I think it is going to be a lot harder than he thinks. Also Im worried in case he goes outside again and gets caught...

Finished chapter 22.
I like that Sanderson writes strong women but there's something about Sarene I don't like. Sometimes she comes across as too proud and prideful to me. Even arrogant. That doesn't mean I don't like the character. There's just some things that bother me about her.

Becky (beaktastic) | 86 comments Yeah, same. I like her because she is a strong and intelligent woman and stuff, but yes she can be a bit too proud and stuff and... yeah. There is something that stops me just loving her.

Kristina (spaz_girl) I am scooting right along today... finished chapter 22!

I like all the main characters. I think the problem with Sarene is that she is smart and she knows it. Being the daughter of a king (who by the way loved her and probably did the best for her, not just gave her the best he could afford) she had access to a grand education. She was probably surrounded (even in court) by people not as learned as her so she is used to being the smartest person in the room. This has lead to that prideful stance when she is trying to get others to listen to her.

So far I really like all of the main three characters. Aside from them though, I really like a lot of the secondary characters, Lukel, Karata, Galladon, but I also really hate Dilaf and am not very fond of Iadon.

And what a place to stop for this part of the discussion! Are they going to see and speak with each other?? OMG, now I have to keep reading!

Becky (beaktastic) | 86 comments Haha, yes, I think chapter 22 is the point where I was absolutely hooked. I loved it before then but at 22 I got properly hooked.

And yeah, although I've said Sarene annoyed me a bit I did really like all of the 3 main characters, and a lot of the secondary characters are quite likeable as well, but I felt like at times we didn't get to see much of them, although I suppose it would possibly detract from the main story a bit. Apart from Filaf. He is not likeable.

I do like how Sanderson gives each character a reason for being how they are. It isn't just randomly deciding good guys vs bad guys. Even the ones I hate have a purpose.
