River entered the courtyard, gazing around at the imposing buildings with wide eyes and shifting her guitar case to the other hand. This was all so new to her, she wasn't sure what to think. She didn't know anyone and felt like an outcast,even though the people here were like her...

Alla walked through the courtyard humming

She sat on a bench and took out a book

River saw a girl over on one of the benches by a tree, and wondered if she should go say hello.

Alla saw river and beckoned her over

Smiling nervously, River went over to where Alla sat. "Hi!" She said.

River saw Arissa, and hurried over, hoping the two would have something in common. Didn't Arissa like swimming? River thought. Well, that's totally my area!

River smiled shyly. "Hi. Sorry, I didn't mean to creep, it's just... well, this is all so new, and you look about as lost as I do, so..."

"Understandable. Here, lemme help ya up." River said, offering Arissa a hand.

"No problem. So, you're obviously here for a reason," River said, brushing her red hair from her eyes. "What's your...you know...power?"

River's jaw dropped. "Wow, that's amazing! Bet it comes in handy sometimes huh?"

River rolled her eyes. "Eh. It's not as cool as yours. I can just project illusions into people's minds. Like when you read about people lost in the desert and they think they see a lake. Well, I can do stuff like that, or give people..."She struggled to find the right word. "Almost hypnotic suggestions, I guess. To alter how they choose." She shrugged.

" Well thanks, butI wouldn't say that. Controling water...that's just awesome! But hey, if ya ever wanna feel like you're standing on the ocean, lemme know!" River laughed. "So, is this your first year here?"

Carlos walked.in's and saw two people talking

River looked over her shoulder and saw another person had entered the Courtyard, but she'd never seen him before.

Alla walked over to the two girls. "Hey"

"Hey Alla," Said River. "What's goin' on?"

"whatcha talkin bout?"

"oh " Alla twirled her hair "my powers are probably nothing compared to yalls."

"all I can do is control fire." She said

River chuckled. "I doubt that. What do you do?"

"Wow! That's so cool!" Said River. "But fire and water so close together...isn't that dangerous?" She joked.

"What classes are you taking?"

"Cool. I almost picked earth magic..." River said, setting her guitar case down.

Mel walked into the Courtyard and sat down on the grass. She pulled out her book, Squibs again, and began to read.

"I like the courtyard, it's nice outside." Said Seleyna.

Angel wrote: ""I like the courtyard, it's nice outside." Said Seleyna."

"It is," Felix unzipped his bag, "if you sit down I could paint you."

"Um, sure." She sat down on a bench. "Is this okay? Or do you want me to sit somewhere else?"

Mel looked up and saw Shale there, waving to her. She smiled and waved her over to talk.

"Perfect spot," Felix sat down across from her and took out his paints, "now make a pose."

She put her hands in her lap and smiled softly.

"Wonderful," Felix says as he starts sketching her outline.

She stays in the position. She knew how to do this as she had done it before for someone else... Her smile faltered.

"Something the matter?" His eyes flickered from her to his canvas.

"Oh, no. I'm fine," She lied. "Don't worry about me," The familiar words slipped out of her mouth as they did almost everyday. She smiled again.

"Said every girl ever," Felix laughs, "every guy knows when a girl says 'I'm fine' its a complete lie." He starts painting on the canvas, "Now tell me whats wrong."

She sighed. "My mom was an artist." She said simply.

"Oh," he looks at her, "do you want me to stop?"

She shook her head. "No, no. Keep going."

"Are you sure," he picks up his paint brush, "I don't want to bring back memories you don't want to remember."

"I want to see how it comes out, keep going!" She prompted.

"Okay," he smiles and starts painting her hair.

She sits still posing for Felix.

"Finished," he turned the painting so she could see.
