Book: Mockingjay Scene: Katniss watches her kids play in the meadow, post-Mockingjay D-O:
Gale put his foot in the green meadow, watching in amazement as two children, vaguely resembling someone he knew, ran around laughing and squealing. He felt as though he should know their parents, but he couldn't quite put his finger on who they were. He walked over to them, intending to ask them if they knew where...Katniss -- he winced, it was still painful to say the name of the girl he once loved -- was now living. As he approached, the children stopped and watched with wide eyes. The children huddled together; the younger one hid behind his sister, while she glared at him with an awfully familiar gaze. The children tensed even more. As Gale stopped and opened his mouth, the children broke into a run. "Wait!" he called after them, but they didn't stop. Gale ran after them.
He followed them to a small, neat cottage in a circle of old rubble that had yet to be cleared. Gale realized that this was the old Victor's Circle. What are they doing here? he thought. As he was looking around, he realized that the children had disappeared into one of the houses. Gale cursed quietly. Now he had to go back into town, where his old friends were, and ask them where Katniss was. Gale turned to go, just as a voice that he had often heard in his dreams spoke incredulously, "Gale?" Gale spun around, not quite believing his ears. He saw her then, Katniss Everdeen, as he used to know. "Katniss!" he cried. Katniss didn't get a chance to respond as Gale rushed to her and pulled her into a hard hug. "Katniss, I'm so sorry," he said. "I'm so sorry that I created the bomb that killed Prim. I'm sorry that I was such a jerk. Can you forgive me? Can we go back to the way we once were?" Katniss sighed. "I'll never forgive you. I can accept the fact that Prim is dead, and that you were the one who caused it, but we will never be the way we once were." Gale hugged her harder. "Please?" "No." Gale pulled back and looked at her. "What if I asked you to marry me?" Katniss looked at Gale, and unreadable expression in her eyes. "That's not possible." "WHY?" Gale asked passionately. "We loved each other once, we can love each other again!" Katniss looked sad. "Gale, I'm married." Gale looked at her. Really looked at her. "You're joking." Katniss didn't reply. "You're joking, right?" he laughed nervously. Katniss looked away. "Katniss! Really!" "..." Gale stopped. "You can't be serious. Who is it?" Katniss looked at Gale full in the face with a familiar expression. It was one Gale often saw when she thought that the answer was so very obvious, it was idiotic for the person whom the gaze was directed at (currently himself) to not know. Then, he knew. "Peeta?" "Yes." Gale didn't know how to respond. "Are you...happy?" "Yes." Katniss was watching him with wary eyes, as if he was a rabid animal. He dropped his hands from her arms. He stepped back and said, "I wish you the best." Katniss smiled wryly. "Thanks." And with that, Gale turned and walked away. Katniss watched him go. Her children came up behind her, gripping her skirts. "Mama, who was that?" asked her son. "Someone I knew." "Is he coming back soon?" her daughter asked. Her mother didn't respond. She turned back to the house . The children ran after their mother, happy spirits restored. But their mother was strangely quiet. She was thinking about the past, and how much she had changed from the Katniss from back then. She wondered if it was a good thing.
