G.P. Francis (gpfrancis) | 2 comments I was born in 1973, with some of my most vivid early childhood memories consisting of visits to the local cinema, which were rare and special spectacles. To my mother's credit, she took us kids to see some great movies, but the one that had the greatest impact, the one that really blew my mind wide open to embrace a whole new set of concepts I had never imagined before, was Star Wars, A New Hope. In those days my home country, Wales, was unfairly relegated to the status of a cultural backwater. It was probably 1978 before Newport's cinema got it's hands on the reel, but that just meant I was a little older and better able to appreciate the movie.

Until then I'd grown up with a steady stream of Enid Blyton's Famous Five and Secret Seven books, and C.S. Lewis' Narnia stories. Watching Star Wars in the cinema was my Science Fiction inauguration. Now I'm hooked, and always looking for the next great sci-fi story, movie or TV show, and always wondering why good quality material is so hard to find.
