DistractionAs toddlers the thought of being able to walk is so deeply valued and imbued in our psyche that we disregard our failures and use the depth of our focus to learn new skills, tapping eagerly into our reservoir of potential concentration.
As adults, walking and talking become habitual to us and the free concentration now gives us the ability to learn new skills. Yet remaining in our default setting, we fall victim to societies distractions. Our minds swarm with passing stimulations - news feeds, youtube videos, friend requests all involuntary slipping us into a state of passivity.
It’s this ability to pay attention and choose what we invest our time into that’s so real and essential, and so hidden in plain sight around us. There’s only so many avocations, companions, residences, entertainments and enjoyments available and only so many days to invest in each. Committing to this work, this girlfriend/boyfriend, this website, this gadget is to withdraw time, energy and resources from another possibility.
To admit that we’re distracted is to admit that we’re being dragged away from what’s worth while, what we value.
