Astrid walked in, vintage camera in her hand. She gave a warm smile to the teacher and started taking pictures. Black and white pictures were amazing to her and she was good at taking them. She was good at pictures in general.
Jackie was in the far right back corner of the room, washing her dark brown hands. Flecks of yellow and orange paint swirled down the drain. She sighed and got back to her seat, where a fall landscape on a mostly blank canvas was waiting. She got back to work, but her eyes slowly were attracted to the window, and there she was again; daydreaming.
Astrid also looked outside, the willows reminding her of home. A small bird flew by and she envied its freedom. She sighed and suddenly her body morphed into that bird's. She jumped up, her wings fluttering. An angry call came from her beak and she morphed back, cheeks pink.
Jackie had almost missed what just happened, she was so deep into space. But she turned just in time to see the girl that was taking pictures morph into a bird, then change back in a blink of an eye."That's really cool." She said quietly. "Like Beast Boy."
Astrid heard her, bird hearing with her temporarily. "Oh, thanks. It gets annoying sometimes, though." She blue green bangs out of her face and put a hand out for the girl to shake. "I'm Astrid, the girl with the freakish DNA," she said.
"I'm Jackie." She smiled. "So... How does your shifting work exactly?" She said, intrigued. Her powers weren't nearly as flamboyant or cool as that.
"Well, my dad decided it would be cool to see what would happen if you missed animal DNA and radioactive mixture and put it into your baby daughter's bloodstream." She scoffed. "I don't know how mom ever loved him. But for me it's just like wiggling your fingers or toes, it's set in my DNA."
"Wow." Jackie blinked. "That's amazing. I guess, I mean, you like it, right?" She asked politely, adding a touch of yellow to her fall landscape.
"Meh. Rather be normal, growing up with a not evil scientist dad." She shrugged. "Now what is your power?"
"I hear you." Jackie smiled cordially, dipping her paintbrush in red. "Oh. Its nothing I can really demonstrate that won't...disturb you." She said carefully, laughing a little bit.
Jackie allowed a quiet smile on her face. "That is true." She dabbed small dots of orange around a tree. "I'm invincible." She said. "Defiantly not as cool as shapeshifting."
Astrid looked at her. "What? Invincibility is pretty cool. You don't walk around a coffee table and accidentally kick it, making your whole toe swell to twice is side and turn purple. I may or may not have done that today..."
Jackie laughed, shaking her head. "If it swelled up all purpley, maybeeee you should see a doctor. Just a suggestion. Your toe bone could be broken." She laughed and cleaned her paintbrush, and mixed two colors together to make mahogany.
Jackie's face softened. "I understand. Not to pry, but is your dad in jail for what he did to you?" As soon as the last word came out of her mouth, Jackie immediately regretted what she said. She normally never asked such personal questions to people she just met. "You don't have to answer that." She looked down, and swirled her paintbrush in some orange-yellow paint.
