carol. | 2616 comments The runner up, for those who might want a longer read.

I had to buy it--my library didn't have a copy. Looking forward to seeing people's thoughts.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I have a copy (omnibus format). I've started this before and quit. Let's hope I can get farther in it this time...

carol. | 2616 comments I liked it better than The Black Company series. Give it a try--it's light.

Patrick LeClerc (patrickleclerc) | 46 comments I enjoyed it. It's Cook doing a fantasy homage to Chandler or Parker. If you you like detective stories, you'll like this.

Kristin (lysanor) I'm currently about halfway through the book. It's quite different than The Black Company series, which I previously enjoyed.

carol. | 2616 comments I wonder, Kristin, if you'll like it more or less than the Black Company. I didn't care for Black Co. very much, but thought this was more enjoyable.

message 7: by Jalilah (new)

Jalilah Sorry, I tried but could not get into this.

Maggie K | 730 comments I really like this series...I have read 7 of them so far, and plan to keep going. I like Black Company as well, but definitely two very different types of fantasy

Yeah, me too.

I've tried a few times. It's very "meh" to me.

Sadly, I have an omibus of the first 3 and a stand alone of (book 12?)

carol. | 2616 comments I didn't mind it, but it did feel very 'period' to me--conscious of being a little spoofy, but not enough to really break genre.

Are you going to continue?

carol. | 2616 comments Unlikely.

Carly (dawnsio_ar_y_dibyn) | 192 comments I got the omnibus edition so I read the first 3; I also read #9 to see if the series picked up later. Although I liked the second book slightly more than the first, the first gives you a pretty good idea of the series. In the next few, Garrett explores the politics of the city, which I found more interesting than the war-torn Cantard, but the dependence on deus ex machina may actually increase. I lent out my copy about a year ago and will probably never see it again, but as far as I remember, the second is a pretty direct and reasonably well-done spoof of The Maltese Falcon and the third goes into religious politics.

I have the first trilogy omnibus, too, but never managed to read past the first lackluster entry.

Heidi Garrett (heidi_g) Oops, got on the wrong thread with my last comment. So I'm about 45% through and finding it engaging and fun. I guess I'm almost the only one? I'm not sure I'd read more in the series, what with my monster TBR pile, but it's a fun variation on fantasy. I do like the grolls.

carol. | 2616 comments I agree--The grolls are funny.

Maggie K | 730 comments I like it too Heidi! Very funny

Benji Glaab (demolitionlegend) | 4 comments I enjoyed this fun little novel. I seem to like characters that abuse themselves.
The pace was also quick, lot's of twists and turns, every character has quirks. what's not to like.
It was a great light read. perfect for the commute to work.

Heidi Garrett (heidi_g) Benji, I enjoyed this book, too! More than I thought I would. There was cleverness throughout and I like that:)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I'm starting to wonder if my husband would like this.

He loved The GrimNoir Chronicles.

Heidi Garrett (heidi_g) I haven't read the GrimNoir Chronicles—what are they about/like?— but I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would. It's not heavy, but as I keep saying, very clever and fun. There is definitely, uhm…social satire through the main character. In the past few years Ive read a lot of snarky female characters, but Garrett is kind of snarky:P so his perspective is fun. The whole book seems to keep a sense of humor about itself and I found that in itself engaging.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Hard Magic - this is the first one.

And by looking at this...I realize I got some shopping to do! book 3 is getting released soon and hubby has been waiting for this one for a long time.

Heidi Garrett (heidi_g) Thank you for the link:D Added it to my tbr list! It does like intriguing.

It's pretty good! Hubby likes it more than I do but I enjoyed it still.
