Daredevil sat by the gargoyles of the cathedral that he always went to. It was quiet so far making it hard for him to see.

Blood Bone and Muscle | 909 comments Out of sheer luck of the draw, Hell's Kitchen had been left completely unscathed of the wormhole attack.

Leaving the demon spawn of all sections seemed like fate's cruel joke to humanity but it didn't make Gambit too unhappy. He was bound to reckless suicidal tendencies.

Walking with his own ambiance, he noted a speaker hooked high on the brick alley wall. It's song the tinny version of "We are the Champion's" by Queen.

"I've paid my dues, time after time..."

It was much more depressing than the usual ghetto set. At least those men, holding boom boxes over their shoulders like kings did it with passion. This was just heart-braking.

Spray paint everywhere made it hard to distinguish the original use of the walls.

Gambit ignored it all, eyes downcast and mouth tucked behind by his brown jacket collar.

He'd made haste to get here to such an extent that he'd formally forgotten to put contacts over his demonic eyes.

"Do I smell a mutie?" Some voice said from behind.

Gambit stopped in mid track, nodded a bit and continued walking.

"Does he know what alleyway he's in?"

Oh, please. Different city, same gang quips.

Blood Bone and Muscle | 909 comments Gambit tilted his chin up a smidge to see himself facing seven guys and a giant spray painted mural of Humanity's Friends or whatever they called themselves these days.

Spacial awareness didn't count when you were deliberately ignoring it.

Upon noticing Gambit's garb. "Watch out," a fifteen year old snickered, "He could be a flasher."

The other guys laughed uproariously but the few who did not were whom now Gambit paid most attention to.

"I could be, wanna come closer n' see?" Gambit thought but said, "You're a real funny guy. What ch'ya doin' wit' de Friends o' Humanity?" he shook his head like it was a real shame to have wasted talent in New York.

"Seven 'gainst one. I don' like those odds."

For them.

Off in the distance, there were no water ways to salt up the nightlife. There were no noisy ports nor drumming street music to perform for the wandering tourist and keep the town alive and looking at them, there was no wonder why.

"He doesn't seem new to this," A rat-faced guy said, "He came here on purpose. Slob with a death wish..."

In a low tone of voice, Gambit replied coldly, "I'm just passin' through. Doh, I'm seriously not interested in joining 'this' um," Gambit motioned to whatever they were like he didn't know himself. Mostly facing off the other guys, they were all so young that Remy hadn't felt the desolate assurance which surfaced when you knew you had a fight to end.

He liked the idea of danger but coming right in its face? It was never the same.

Backlit by the streetlights, they marched closer in a line and that was when he knew they were behind him too. The mince use of light kept most of their faces shrouded. He pivoted around to see over his shoulder.

"If he starts to do anything funny, shoot."

The most authoritative of them all had begun to give orders. That was never a good sign. It meant they were familiar with what worked and what didn't.

"Y'know lynch mobs are illegal," Gambit said, happy his hands were in his pockets and gripping a pack of 52 (not cigarettes, these were much more killer).

"Honhonhon~ French mute. Very funny. Did'jya know that explosives are illegal?" oh, merde, "We're doing America a favour."

Not a word more, the first two cards were flying in both directions of his attackers, they sliced the air, flushed with the whining crescendo of excited molecules and the likeliness of shrikens. The cards, both spades, exploded on impact.

Meanwhile, Gambit had slung his bo staff over his shoulder, midway into a backwards flip which served as pole vaulting. He'd pushed his body, feet up, about to swing out of the crowd when one guy had the brilliant idea of pointing a taser at the base of his staff right before the cards could explode.

The effect: Absolute collapse.

It was in that moment that his muscles lost and he came crashing down on a card which threw him back. Gambit's body was sent rocketing with many others, his head among the first to collide into a wall and was the worst injured. It cracked bloodily.

Adamanium maybe, that bo staff was still a conductor for electricity.

His last thoughts were something along the lines of thanking the Lord. Thank God I didn't have Wolverine's skeleton, he thought and his conscious closed and his eyes shut.

Blood Bone and Muscle | 909 comments If collateral damage didn't seem like enough, the civilian population didn't take lightly being put in a war zone with combustibles when they had children to protect.

Hesitantly sidling out of their hallows with guns and baseball bats. The residents of Hell's Kitchen made slow way to the wreckage. They found many injured young boys from the private school nearby and not as armed as Gambit had thought, but protected with devices of self-defence.

Most boys were awake and aware of everything. Only they were pretending to sleep lest their mothers found them. Some actually bore the injuries of tonight's intended violence and those stuck out like sore thumbs, blood pouring from their noses.

Next to them lay sprawled a guy much older, with stubble and metal boots. He seemed to be sleeping as well with his mouth hanging open. They couldn't see the goose-egg welt in his shaggy hair.

One of the youngest boys, who'd only followed because mutie bashing was his older brother's pathology got to his knees.

"Brendan!" He wailed, "Brendan, are you--?" His brother was in the fetal position next to him, disoriented to the point of being inert. That sight sent the young brunette in rage.

Brendan's little brother stood up and marched, adults watching, to Gambit's prostrate body and kicked it with all his young might.

"You wicked monster, you killed Brendan. You mutant. You You MUTANT! You-you--" He couldn't find the word, his small chest pumping and he cried out to the sky, a sound of animal.

The adults looked at each other. They looked at the inert children and then at the apparent mutant bomber which had shook their neighbourhood.

There was no second thought on what they had to do. Baseball bats now at the ready. They would make sure this mutant never woke up. No one would tell a soul.

Blood Bone and Muscle | 909 comments Bash, blood, splat.

Onomatopoeia of tonight's massacre.

When they figured out that Gambit was wearing body armour, they stripped him of it.

Needlessly indescribable gruesome acts were passed on this body.

No one remembered when someone got the idea (after the brass knuckle uppercut or after his ribs gave?), one man, ornamented with the handlebar moustache of the century pushed through the crowd and commanded them to stop in the name of God.

They looked at him, then at his long gun. Some of the young boys were finally going home. He had them leave and said to the adults that their ministrations were un-American and if they would end this, they would do it properly.

Parting, the crowd stood around like this was ritual liturgy in a Sunday morning sacrament, they stood like it was a military parade honouring fallen soldiers and like then, they waited for the gunshots.

The spoken, portly man pressed his cold gun barrel to Gambit's butchered face, touching almost calmly his middle forehead, nudging away a few threads of blood soaked bangs. The sick irony of using a gun as someone's last form of reassurance and sympathy.

He stayed like that for a second, not even the rats itched. All eyes glued, mesmerized.

"Guess I should pull the trigger," He said almost sadly, "Here goes for nothing."

Daredevil heard the commotion and dropped down knocking out the man with the gun with a swift and direct hit. He faced the crowd and stood in front of Gambit. They saw the very thing that scared all of Hell's Kitchen, the devil himself.

Blood Bone and Muscle | 909 comments Jaws dropped, some ran but some pointed restlessly at the near corpse.

"He is to blame!"

"Did you see what he did?"

"Yes, and I saw you provoke him. You will have to answer for your crimes." Daredevil said gruffley. He pulled out his short staff for intimidation and threat as he went to help Gambit.

☯Jocey☯ (joceymc) | 1273 comments Jax flew in in her hawk form before shifting to her human form. "Sh*t." She mumbled under her breath before running over to Gamebit. She wanted to slap him so bad that she did, but only lightly on his shoulder. "D*mn it Gamebit. Paige is dying and your seriously injured!" She whisper yelled at him before looking over to Daredevil cautiously. "If your one of the ones who hurt him, I swear that I will kill you." She said in a cold hard threatening tone.

Blood Bone and Muscle | 909 comments The crowd shivered as one, all aware of the eyeless mask of the devil on nightwatch. They'd all heard of what he'd done to criminals but surely he could catch them all. They were too great in numbers.

Worth the risk of a couple lives imprisoned in medical bills, they all scrammed at the count of three, running for the hills.

"Ahhhhhhhhh!"

☯Jocey☯ (joceymc) | 1273 comments Jax opened her bag and took out some icebreakers. They were a candy yes; but they were perfect for waking someone up with. These icebreakers were over two years from their expiration date and tasted horrific. She plopped one into Gamebit's mouth and the nasty mint flavor started to spread across his tongue.

Jax looked back at Daredevil, "What are you going to do with him? If you aren't going to help I suggest you leave since I really don't want a murder or an almost murdered person on my hands. I'm not in the mood. And I'm kinda in a rush, my sister might be dying this very moment." Jax said in her cold harsh tone and her eyes glowed reddish. She looked at Daredevil before putting Gamebit up into a sitting position against the wall.

"You better wake up Monsieur or I will murder you. With a spork. Paige might be dying!" She shouted at Gamebit half heartedly before shifting into a large tigress and keeping watch over Gamebit and casting a wary eye at Daredevil.

Blood Bone and Muscle | 909 comments Liquid poured out of his tilted ear, red blood and a direct indication of basilar scull fracture. There were wounds and bruises on the scalp and face but most already looked hours old.

In the light, his pupil didn't shrink. On the Glasgow Coma Scale, Gambit was currently a one. There was no response save for a twitch in his fingers which sparked at loud sound.

He was pulp beaten mess hammered to the wall behind and mostly beaten about the head and chest which was never where anyone is wished to be found beaten. If Hank had been around, he would have been ordering a monitor of proper oxygen supply to create adequate cerebral blood flow. Yet, Hank was not here. He was most likely dead under Drake's suction of Manhattan.

The only two around were Daredevil himself and a telepath who couldn't even crack into the patient's brain to see if it was working.

"You are no where near as bad as Paige is or was yet you won't frickin wake up! All Paige wants is to see you cuz' she thinks she's gonna die!!" Jax shouted at Gamebit's unconscious body.
