Shadowspun | 8 comments I found the use of the Greek Mythology a little offputing at first. I was a geek about Mythology in HS and College and some of this just struck an off vibe.

Then I tried not to view it with Mythology 101 mindset but as characters on their own and that helped. I'm still not sure about Vic though - he is just so annoying

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments The sparkler Valkyries put me off at first, so I know! If you do look past the "101" view point it is fun.

Have you read them all so far?

Lorelle (lozza2407) | 46 comments I think I need mythology 101. I might try and squeeze it in :)

message 5: by Shadowspun (new)

Shadowspun | 8 comments yes I've read all of them - and her other series as well.
Not sure a standard mythology 101 will cover it. Nike is not usually one of the major deities of Greek/Roman mythology. Jennifer Estep does do a decent job of introducing the more unusual ones - but Edith Hamiliton's Greek Mythology is a good place to start for a 101.

Tasha Turner (tashaturner) Just got this and look forward to joining in the discussion.

You're right. There are a ton of other mythologies in this series. It's just generaly classified as a Greed, which is funny since it has major Norse drama going on.

Priscilla (ppomeroy72) | 364 comments I started this book with hesitation. I like the Elemental series, but not her Superhero series, so I was on the fence about whether or not I liked this one. I should not have worried! This book grabbed my attention. I like the mix of mythologies and that it is non-standard in the roles.
I had to smile at how she incorporated her other two series by making the Pork Pit her favorite restaurant and one of the Superheros one of her favorite comic book characters.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments I didn't know that about the Superheros, very cool.

Glad you ended up liking this one, the mix of myths is really fun.

Lorelle (lozza2407) | 46 comments I started it last night and although only 20 pages in, it looks pretty good for YA!

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Glad you're enjoying it! It really is a fun series. Not quite up to her Assassin series, but still a ton of fun!

Shadowspun | 8 comments Depends on what you mean by up to her Assassin series.

This is YA and in general, I find YA to be a little simpler emotionally - or at least more simply explained emotionally than non-YA series by the same authors.

I think all 3 of her series are very well written - for the superhero series - these are supposed to be Chick Lit so they are written in a lighter style and have a large dose of humor in them which may not appeal to everyone.

I also liked the tie-ins to her other series.

Priscilla (ppomeroy72) | 364 comments I love humorous, laugh out loud stories, just not comic book ones. That is really what her Superhero series reminded me of. I just did not fall in love with them. I read 2 and that was it.
I agree that YA tends to be more simple emotionally, to an extent. They may not be sexual, but sometimes the characters have more issues to deal with. I never thought I would like YA, but almost every YA book that I have read I have liked so far.

message 14: by Shadowspun (new)

Shadowspun | 8 comments by simpler I meant that they tend to make sure the main character's emotional state and feelings about people are obvious and most others are as well - even if the lead characters don't think so - and in nonYA they are not always emphasised

Vera M. Just started this one. I am liking the set up. Seems to get right into things. Not bad so far for YA. I find some YA to be very good, some to be very bad and some good for the actual young adults... this so far seems like it might be more enjoyable for actual young adults, but seems to be okay. We will see how it pans out for me.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Vera, I think you're right about the age thing.

YA can be hit or miss on the emotional depths of its characters. However, what I meant for this series is that everything from the plot, love interests, and so on is so glaringly obvious (well, at least to me) that it detracted from the story.

I will admit I've only read up to book 2. So who knows, maybe the next ones will make me eat my own words.

Alex (acobaf) | 25 comments I had a hard time when I first started reading it too, not just the Mythology 101 but the character development. After about 1/2 way into to story it got better.
Still a little too YA for me, not enough depth or plot and lack of dialog kinda got to me as well.

message 18: by Vera (new) - rated it 4 stars

Vera M. So for a YA read I think it is pretty decent. I do like her elemental assassin series too. Her reads are quick and fun. They have a good mix of being lighthearted and having some great edge of your seat action.

Tasha Turner (tashaturner) I'm so far behind. I have 3-4 books to read for a number of groups for May reads. One is over 800 pages. I expect I'll be commenting late here.

Lorelle (lozza2407) | 46 comments argh 70 pages in and im not connecting to Gwen is it? So it gets better half way through does it? I guess she shows her age when she whines about the librarian that employs her actually asks her to put away books...how dare he!

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Kiss of Frost is up next for our YA Group Series read. It's the second book in the series.

So far who is your favorite character?

Lorelle (lozza2407) | 46 comments I finally finished the first one after 2 weeks of putting it down for other books and skimmed the complete last half :( I just didnt like all the repetition and inner ramblings, and I was trying really hard to find something interesting about the characters. Seeing that this seems to be the authors style, I dont think Ill continue :(

It took a lot to finish for me to but its worth it in the end an I'm waiting for the next one. You should do a buddy read, its easier for me that way because you can have fun with the dull parts. If you want to I would be up to helping you finish :)

I appreciate the offer Alexandra :) Its more the writing style that I dont enjoy. With her elemental assassins series, i rated down for the repetitive nature and will put off book 2 for a long time, even though I enjoyed the storyline in that one. If it was a three star read I'll usually say Ill try the next one in the next 3 months or so, or if I consider it a quick read. It should be a quick read, but I found myself putting it down for so many reasons.
