Maddison (Brainyboots) cougar relationships (like girl is 16, boy is 28) it really annoys me even though it isn't my opion in real life.

Cy | 1 comments Mine is definitely when books have really big or really tiny font. I prefer it in the middle.

message 3: by Tad (new)

Tad | 1 comments When you can't find a summary anywhere on the book. This really dissuades me from reading it, particularly because I have no idea what the book is about and do not wish to plunge headfirst into some unknown novel.

Betsy | 1 comments I don't typically read books by new authors, because I fear that their writing will be poor and reflect their lack of experience in the field.

Sam (sam222) I have to say anything romance. I just don't like them, I find them cheesy and I'm unable to get into them, so therefore I do not read them.

I also don't like books written by celebrity's, I feel like they have TV, clothe lines, music, perfumes and god knows what else, leave the books alone.

Gabriella (gmargarita) I'll admit that I'm totally the type to judge a book by its cover. I look for an interesting cover, then if the title intrigues me enough I pick it up and read the description. I don't like any of the YA vampire/magic books, there's just too many of them now. And I can't stand novels that are only about romance, although I used to love them. YA romance novels all have the same basic plot and aren't memorable in the slightest. They make me cringe, haha.

Amen to that! I remember reading City of Bones... hehe...

Rose (ka-tet-rose) | 37 comments I honestly can't stand romance in a lot of book descriptions. Right when they mention that "mysterious hot love muffin that just transferred to her school" I set the book back down on the shelf.

Completely agree.

Anna (Unquenchable Reads) (unquenchablereads) When it uses bad word after bad word. Non stop.

Jenea (alohanea) | 14 comments When an author refuses to include some cursing or any mention of the word sex but has no problem with graphic violence.

Samantha (sammgasmic) | 41 comments - Writing style is a deal breaker for me, if the author is too wordy (spends 4 pages describing a room or something similar to the very last detail) I can't read it I just start falling asleep

- Weird side bar inner commentaries in first person books annoy me, and I know that sounds confusing, but an example would be the Anita Blake series which I'm not sure how I read as many of them as I did but there are parts where she asks her self questions and instead if replying to herself in an intelligent was she says something like "Naww" not even just "No that couldn't be true" but "Naww?" Every time I read that I couldn't help but picture her as a cowboy reject or something. It just screws with my head and takes away from the overall story.

- I'm also guilty of judging books by their cover, which isn't the best strategy to choosing book I know but I can't help it. If the cover is pretty or interesting then I don't think the book will be interesting. And now it seems like a huge portion if the books that have awesome covers have the same storyline. Girl is different. Boy is dangerous. Girl likes boy. Boy likes girl. Even though boy is dangerous he doesn't hurt girl. girl and boy fall in love. Gahhh! I hate it. So I've been trying to base whether or not I read a book on the reviews and ratings it gets and try not to be discouraged by a disappointing cover.

- Books that are strangely reminiscent I f other books I've read. I can't stand it when I get roped in to reading almost the exact same book twice because an author somehow got away with plagiarism.

- I'm sure there's more but I can't think if the rest of them now.

I agree with you completely, Samantha, with regard to book covers. I've fallen into the awful habit of judging a book by its cover. I always search for the pretty, eye catching covers and am more inclined to pull those off the shelf to read the summary. And as you said, most of these books follow the same exact story line, which becomes boring after awhile. My new year's resolution this year is going to be to break the habit of judging a book by its cover, although it's not going to be easy.

message 15: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (sammgasmic) | 41 comments Yeah Olivia, that's why I like looking at book lists that only have the name of the book and the summary. That way I'm not drawn in by a pretty cover.

That's actually a really good idea. I might have to start doing that myself.

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) My book turnoffs include bad editing, bad cover art, a predictable storyline, and teeny tiny print. I HATE catching spelling errors. I also really dislike when the cover art doesn't match the author's description of a character.
