Kai Hunter | 192 comments I'm going to be 44 years old next week and my Mother is making me read two books so she can be happy. The Postcard and The Crossroads, both by Beverly Lewis. My Mother has become addicted to Amish/Mennonite fiction and is trying to get me hooked too. She tells me in almost every phone conversation we have now how she wishes she had been born Mennonite. She is overlooking some very important reasons why I will never be hooked on this genre.

1. I live on the outskirts of a very large Amish/Mennonite community in Pennsylvania.
2. I like electricity and indoor plumbing.
3. I like reading about sex.
4. Did I mention that I've spent more than my fair share of time stuck behind a horse and buggy while trying to get someplace?
5. Did I mention that more often than not the Amish (as a group) are not particularly nice to "the English" of which I am one. Unless they are trying to sell us something.
6. Amish treat their animals as farm equipment. They aren't pets, they serve their purpose and that is all they are for. (Forgive me if this sounds like a stereo type, but I've been to many horse auction and have seen the way Amish horses are treated after they are too old to have babies or pull a plow. They are sold to dog food companies. I won't even get into the puppy mills.)

But yes, I am reading these two books just to make my Mother happy despite my trying to reason with her...wanna bet she'll try to get me to read more?

Most likely she will.
:)

I have the opposite experience. I'm always pushing my mom to read the books i love. She's always resistant (because of her busy work schedule) but then can't put them down. LOL!

Kai Hunter | 192 comments I finished the first book and then took a break before starting the 2nd book. The past week the guilt making phrases started flowing so I started the 2nd and am about half way through. They're ok books, but they don't do anything for me. It makes me sad because I know how much she wants me to like them. I just am not interested in this genre at this time in my life. I truly hate disappointing my mom.
