I got this on a whim the other day at an old book store. I read the first chapter on my way home (My Dad was driving not me :D) and I cannot wait to read the rest. It grabs your attention right off the back.
Sweet thanks.I am on the 91st page, somewhere in the 13th chapter I believe. The charters are all so great. But so far you don't have long to get acquainted with the charters before they are gone. A few short chapters at most. It is really surprising how many charters Robert. L is going through.
This book is awesome! I love Alan, cannot decide how much. Maybe it is just the Scottish accent. Love the pace the book is progressing at and the language, while hard to follow (especially with the accent), it just spectacular. Love it! Cannot put it down.
I think it is so coll how Alan and Davie bonded so quickly. They were completely thrown together by chance and look at the friendship that sprung up between them.Something about today's society that always saddens me is how people relate to other people and how few really tight good friendships there are. Seems like everyone is stabbing everyone else in the back and when men/boys become really good friends it is looked down upon by women. I know we are not exactly talking about that, but it is what I was thinking about while reading.
And may I add that any book that has a film version with the excellent Philip Glenister in it--is well worth reading, in addition to its own merits.Shelley

I have read the "dust Bowl" and found it very depressing. Which times were just then. But I was also unable to connect with the charter who I found whiny and irritating. So "Kidnapped" has been made into a movie? I want to see that should be very interesting. Do you know what year it was made?
I bought and finished reading this one, only to later realize you can read it for free on Goodreads. Silly me, I'll know better for next time!Aside from the first few chapters, this story was action packed. With the accents all over the place, it reminded me of Outlander, but without all the romance. Though I suppose it did have a "bromance" going on.
I know that there's a second book, but did anyone else feel a little let down by the ending of this one? It seemed to conclude well, but I think it could have been wrapped up a little neater.
I am just a few chapters shy of finishing, but I hope to have it done by the end of today.Maybe it is just me, but even when the book is free on goodreads, I much prefer to have the hard copy with me. But I will check next time to see if it is free and put up a link and let people know if it is.
I did finishes and within the deadline, just forgot to post. I loved the whole book! Something was nagging at me while I was reading and it was not until I was done did I realize there was no female main charter or love affair going on in at all! So refreshing I thought.I did think the end lacked a bit of a bang, perhaps cliff hanger endings were not Stevensons thing? Or maybe he had not planned on a second book and wrote it later? Not sure, but all in all I felt satisfied at the end.
Read for the catch-up challenge. For some reason this book didn't really click with me, though I wanted it to. I enjoyed the beginning with Uncle Ebenezer, but after he was kidnapped it didn't really keep my interest, and I'm sad that it didn't. Just one of those things.
I read this for my 2017 Catch-Up Challenge. I enjoyed David Balfour’s coming-of-age trials and tribulations in the Scottish Highlands far more than I thought I would. While Stevenson’s style can be a bit distant and impersonal at times, I still found David to be an engaging protagonist, and his transformation from youth to man was enjoyable to watch.I also enjoyed the exploration of friendship through Alan and David. While they came at life from very different worldviews, they remained loyal to each other.
The ending, however, did fall a bit flat for me. I was expecting more finality, I guess. I realize that there is a sequel, but if Stevenson already had that in mind, well, it was just a bit clunky.
