I own the regular dvds and the extended editions and also a special edition that was released with extra behind the scene footage.
I own all the extended edition dvd's. I sold my theatrical editions because I prefer the extended. Planning on getting the extendeds on blu-ray as well but just haven't yet. Not exactly cheap. lol.
Similarly to yourselves, i own both the normal DVD's and also the extended versions (which i have seen countless times, as so amazing).
I recently was given a gift ~ a boxset of poster, booklet and DVD of the animated classic "Lord of the Rings". The animated version (1978) is somewhat different to say the least! Has anyone seen it?

I own both the theatrical version and Extended Version of the LOTR trilogy on DVD. Pure goodness. I also bought "The Hobbit" the other day and watched it thrice during the weekend. Homework was abandoned. For Gondor!
I have The Hobbit on blu ray also, guess I didn't mention it above. I have seen the animated LotR many, many years ago so I can't remember much about it other than I really didn't like it. I guess I couldn't get over Boromir in a skirt and horns. lol.

Yes, the Viking horns were quite a shock! The fact that it is left unended is a shame...the Orcs and Ringwraith's i found VERY scary with their blood eyes *squirms* and i wasn't sure about the difference between Men and Elves??
A good 1st attempt (concidering the magnitude of J.R.R. Tolkien's book), but not my 'cup-of-tea'.

I didn't even realise this version existed! The cover art is beautiful. One of my favourite early recordings of the Hobbit is this classic audio version - beautifully done, available on You Tube:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLkWKE...
I also did not much care for the animated version. The "animated" shadowy orcs were particularly off-putting.I have all three of the Peter Jackson films on Extended Edition as well as the Blu-Ray of the Extended Edition.
I didn't buy the Hobbit yet because I'm waiting for the Extended Edition to come out for that.
I really enjoy the animated versions... (the one that you have, Lucinda) as well as The Hobbit, and The Return of the King, despite the fact that they are cheesy and not really very well-done (though the animation for Fellowship was pretty good, the animation in Return of the King is just ridiculous, and the songs are kinda silly... but fun for kids) simply because they are movies I watched as a child. We own the extended editions of LOTR in both regular DVD and blu-ray - and are waiting to purchase the extended edition of the Hobbit... because I will never re-watch the theatrical releases once the extended editions are available. :)
I am really looking forward to purchasing the extended DVD version of 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey'! If it is similar to the extended versions for the Lord of the Rings trilogy, then it will be good.
Lucinda wrote: "I am really looking forward to purchasing the extended DVD version of 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey'! I don't allow P.J. to "trick" me into buying the theatrical versions anymore (since extended edition of Fellowship) LOL I'm just enough of a nerd that I know I will never re-watch the theatrical release once the extended edition is available, so it's truly a waste of money for me not to wait.
An upside to this is that any of my friends who want to come watch the movies with me are automatically subjected to the lengthier version of the film (insert evil laugh here).
Once i have the extended edition...then i tend to watch it rather than the original! Longer perhaps - but i don't mind.
You're right Dena, it can be a pretty long wait for the extended edition. I used to just run out and get the theatrical versions, but these days I don't mind waiting like Jenelle. Also, like Lucinda, I don't bother going back to the original after I have the extended versions. If I do have the time to sit down and watch a full movie I don't want to miss all those extra scenes. In fact, it's been so long since I watched the originals, I can't really even remember what the extended versions added in most cases!
Yesterday i watched The Desolation of Smaug on DVD for the first time {as i didn't go to the cinema to see it}!
I am too impatient and so waiting since Dec. 2013 was a long time...and so i just had to get it on DVD.
No doubt, when the extended version is out i will watch that more than the original!
Any thoughs on hobbit film 2?
