I just found out there's a copy of this book at our place in FL, so I'll be reading it when I get there and following the comments here. I'll try to get some comments to everyone before the meeting!
I just finished chapter 3....OMFG!
I love this book.
Random thoughts:
1) I'm glad I've watched 5 seasons of Mad Men. It makes imagining the late 50s and early 60s so much easier when King is describing the dress, hair styles and general mood of the culture.
2) As a history major and aspiring philosopher I'm geeking out over the "butterfly effect" nature of this story. The domino effect Al lays out is chilling.
3) This book is hilarious. The dialogue feels real and witty. So far my favorite line is "booze fucked."
4) Yes, it is still 849 pages but it's 849 pages of excellent writing. So much of the length comes from the amount of detail included; detail that makes the story feel real and not all that far fetched. Some of the length also derives from the characters working thoughts out in their heads. These are weighty burdens they bear and quick decisions are few and far between (at least so far).
Question:
Who suggested this book??? I owe that person a drink.

Stay up late many nights and listened to this going to and from work. Spent every bit of my free time for the past two weeks listening to this story. It was so good I could not pull myself away. I'm a little sad it's over.
