What exactly are zombies? Does anybody know?

Depends on the mythology you're pulling from; "real" zombies are people laboring under the effects of a drug, some myths go with evil sorcerers animating the dead to do their bidding (either with or without any of the body's original personality or memories), some go with the "spillover" once heaven and hell are full, some go with drug or disease infection. Pretty much the only universal constants are "it's dead," and "it probably wants to eat people."A couple of the ideas I've been toying with of late are they're caused by a strain of leprosy that significantly slows their metabolism and impedes new cell growth, but are exceptionally prone to rabies; the non-rabid ones are trying to find ways to fit in to a society with "racism," equal rights, changes to medical science caused by their immune systems and the like, while the rabid ones are busy stirring up trouble and reinforcing negative stereotypes.
The other is that life is itself an aberration, evolution or mutation. These zombies are more akin to golems (starting as earth and clay fashioned in the shape of a man and animated), but some of them have actually become "alive," so in this story the zombies are suffering from a "human apocalypse." XD
Oooo. Sounds good. I haven't done much with Zombies so I'm not quite sure what they are. I find your theories very interesting

Zombies have become so much more badass. I look at it as Zombies have become much more popular and cool whereas Vampires have become less cool and taken a big dip.
Zombies are good as two dimensional villains, unless you call "Ekmmu" Zombies, every zombie is mindless, and as such you can either sneak by or kill. Granted you can have some fun with either one, but in the end one reason Vampires are popular, is they can interact, be true villains of characters. with a Vampire, Necrophilia is debatable, with Zombies not so much!
Zombies have become the essential top notch creatures. From The Walking Dead to World War Z they have taken over televison and media. Book wise as well since it seems every 5 out of 15 horror books are zombie or zombie related. What's to say? We really dig Zombies!
I agree, I have seen them everywhere now.
