Dan (kertrats) | 40 comments Well, I wrote a review for this one a couple of months ago. You can find it here: http://treklit.blogspot.ca/2013/03/de...

I enjoyed this one. The Horta are a really cool alien race, and I really appreciate seeing them used in Trek Lit. "Slider Dan" was a great character.

Kathleen Jerome (katjerome) | 16 comments I really struggled with this book. I struggled with the basic premise of the story. I thought the ideas were so hard to believe that it distracted me from the story.

I loved the way the main characters were portrayed! Not having watched a lot of TOS- I would love to hear some other opinions. This book felt a lot like an episode to me. I think that feeling kept it feeling fun and entertaining- which is good- but hard to make it great.

I loved the Horta. I especially loved the peak inside both Horta and Spock offered by the mind melding.

I had such a hard time buying into Vesbius that is was difficult to care whether the Horta Wouk be successful. The idea that the residents of Vesbius modified there own DNA so much that they were no longer "human", couldn't leave the planet, and couldn't undo what they had done were just too ridiculous for belief. I really try to buy in to whatever the author is setting up, and we have certainly seen more ridiculous ideas on Trek, but this didn't work for me. I didn't feel that Tony Daniels justified what he did with the story. His explanations were just too weak and unbelievable.
