This book became the repository of all the weird and eclectic things I know, and somehow it managed to shape itself into an unlikely, entertaining and meaningful story. I don’t know how I know about all these things, but how they came together, sometimes collided together, is the mystery we call Art. Mostly, this book comes from my forever love of romantic comedies, and my endless fascination with the convoluted play between men and women. Or women and women; men and men. Especially when it comes to sex!

I have long pondered the question, when do we reach the point where enough is enough, and we must take action? For seeds, for children, for our own good? When does that moment of awakening come for each of us? For Ursula, once she woke up her sexuality, she also woke up her political awareness and found the strength to take actions she would otherwise have avoided like the plague. Donny too. It’s a playful idea that sex and Eros can be the prime motivators, but it’s the truth. One awakening leads to another—and any awakening can fuel the courage to act. The dead just lie there doing nothing.

I think about rebels and lovers. Each are created by a fire in the heart. Brave acts of protest, brave acts of love—each require a tremendous courage. Or folly. Following pleasure can blind us to the real dangers of taking leaps. Thank goodness!
