Do we ever read what exactly happened to end Aiden's life in this book?

Hi Cindy - not precisely. But the indications are he died from an explosion in the bunker, most likely from a booby trap in the equipment (mixer) on the scaffolding. Joshua realizes something isn’t right with it being there, just as he had a sense something was wrong at the pond earlier in the book.

Before sending them on the mission, the lieutenant also makes a comment about the discovery of booby traps in the enemy trenches after the Germans retreated. And though he clearly didn’t find it, that might have been why the inspector was in the bunker to begin with.

Thanks - that was helpful. I must not have been reading carefully enough to catch on to the "didn't feel right" feeling Joshua had about the bunker. I do definitely remember the same feeling he had about the pond. Appreciate your insights. Very good book.
