I haven't run into this but it sounds like something that would catch me offguard too. Thanks for the warning!
wow this was very scary to read about.I have been lucky to have not had this happen to me, but i will definitely be mindful because of this
Hi Nikki, just read your blog, thanks so much for sharing this, it is very important to share these experiences. Much appreciated.
Ouch. Good to know. A few weeks ago I paid a deposit to a cover artist who seems like a total professional (her covers speak for themselves) but she's slow to respond and to keep me informed about her schedule. I have no idea when she will start on my cover. Due to the quality of her work, I assume she's constantly being requested covers, and she may be busy, so I don't want to push and demand she replies to my emails. But I'm starting to get a little nervous.
If you are paying someone for a service you should never be worried about "bothering" them. I think asking her for a time frame is perfectly reasonable. You should probably have a simple contract that states the terms.
Hey Jessica – your comment gave me the inspiration* (*read: balls) to email her. She got back with me right away. I hope (no, I know) this cover will be worth the wait!
I have a few artists I worked with and they never feel like I'm bothering them because they want me to be happy with the finished product. Which works because when I love it I recommend them to others with similar projects in mind :)
