Clean,Non Religious-Reads discussion

Hi everyone,I LOOOVE cowboys,Texas Rangers,sheriffs, marshals,and deputies,so I have undoubtedly read western/pioneer historicals the most.

I enjoy most genre's as long as the heroines are not TSTL and the men cannot be 'whipped' by the heroine,but is a quick wit with a great sense of humor and playfulness,and also be serious,and compassionate.Can't stand an 'always joking' insincere clown.Love a hero who has a tender heart towards other's misfortunes.

I am starting to read more Regency Romance,as well.

I really enjoy the "Love Finds You In..." series by Summerside Publishing.Clean,sweet romances without being 'preachy'.

I love historical fiction, preferably set in some foreign location like India or China. I also read a lot about the pioneers and out west. But really anything set in any time but today. :)

Dorca, have you read Wild Child, by Mary Jo Putney? I think it's Regency England. From the man's POV. VERY well written.

Warning!!!! one 2-star reviewer said this about Wild Child! "but the love scenes are pornography in text form."Such books will not be permitted on our bookshelf.

Thanks for the heads up. I had a look at the reviews on amazon and then looked at the authors other books (namely, this one's sequel) and it said that there were steamy sex scenes so I figured, hmmm..most likely wild child will too. So I decided against it.
It reinforces on me why we all need to write reviews of the books we read, its so easy to forget which books are suitable for what audiences if we don't. Some people have awesome memories but I forget from one month to the next what was in which book...

So true,and that's also why I try to remember to always check the 1-2 star reviews because those are the ones that most often mention offensive elements.

Romantic Comedy,and Romantic Suspense are also favorites.

These days I am especially very much into clean, witty, cute and light-hearted Contemporary Romances :-)

There may be several Inspirational or Christian because that used to be about all I would read, but now I am particular about avoiding religious proselytizing except in the Amish-themed books, since their culture is religion-based can't avoid it.

I don't mind some 'god-talk' as long as it isn't too preachy.

A word of warning, though, I'd avoid all of Juliet Marillier's adult series, since I read in the reviews there are graphic sex and rape scenes.

My favorite sub-genre would have to be suspense, although it's hard to find clean content here. (Aside from my own books, LOL)

I listened to one by Angela Ford that was clean, but I also found it hard not to roll my eyes through most of the book. It might have been in part because of the narrator, who paused every 4-5 words and about put me to sleep. I think this was one of her earlier books, because the plot wasn't executed too well... But she has a lot of books out, so I'm half-tempted to see if she gets any better.

The one I listened to was "Surrender."

If any of you are willing to overlook a few curses and one or two easily skipped sex scenes for a well done plot with great characters, I am very much enjoying Dana Marton. "Deathwatch" has one, or maybe two f-bombs, and two mildly graphic sex scenes that are easily skipped, but I found the story engaging, the heroine clever with some of the cutest alternative curse words ever, and I was very entertained.

I'm currently listening to her "Silent Threat" and enjoying it. I don't recall any f-bombs, so far (I'm at, like, 80%) but there is a few s-words. No sex, so far, but if it's like the other one, it'll be at the end, after the story is wrapped up. (Totally skippable.)

Re:Kristi, "Silent Threat" sounds more like my type. I really prefer that authors leave out the "F" bombs and sex scenes.

Update on "Silent Threat."

I'm still not done, but the bad guy pretty two F bombs in a row go as I'm ramping up into the climax. 😔 But it hasn't been a total spree of them. There's been two intimate scenes that just barely qualify as almost graphic. And that's just because penetration is mentioned, basically. You blink and you miss it.

I'm less than two chapters until the end, but I'll let you know if any more f bombs fly. (It's so sad, really, because these are really good books, but ya just can't call them squeaky clean!)

Okay, appreciate the info. As long as the cursing is not pervasive, I can overlook it. One of my favorite reads has 2 "F" bombs that were a totally uncalled for surprise, and out of left field!

Update on Silent Threat
Final curses count: 5 f-bombs, 2 s-words.
Final sex scene count: 4 - mildly graphic (no florid descriptions of body parts, but penetration and orgasms are mentioned.) Should be easy to skip/skim over.
Violence: some, but not overly gory or graphic. Intense, though.

I very much enjoyed it. Well-developed characters, strong women, and a good, exciting plot.

I love contemporary cowboy, but also beach and small town. Add in a protector or enemy to lovers trope and I'm there

Hi Jennifer, have you read any of Orson Scott Card's fantasies? Very creative, well written, clean. I'm currently reading the 2nd of the Pathfinder series and loving it.
