Private websites have a right to censor whatever they feel like, but I don't think the government has the right to censor anything, at all. Especially words, but also nudity. That's ridiculous. Would you censor a factory, because it also makes things?

I think the government has the right to censor some things...I mean we dont need child-nudity going around online and the government not able to do anything about it. We can't be all anti-government about everything.

I think nudity should be censored...the Internet would be like going through a battlefield just going on Google if we didn't have censorship of bad things.

Jake | 92 comments I remain of the opinion that that responsibility belongs to the owner of the website.

So if that website publisher wants to put out lots and lots of Child-nudity, thats fine because he owns the website?

I agree with Billy.

message 8: by Jake (new)

Jake | 92 comments Billy: Well, in most cases, those pictures are already a result of kidnappings anyway, which should obviously remain illegal, and if the owner of a website is doing something illegal, then their website should be pulled and shut down. However, if a parent feels the need to take a picture of her bathing toddler for a scrapbook and post it on her blog, I don't think that should be censored.

And this website should be pulled and shut down by....the government. Showing how in some cases censorship is necessary.

Jake | 92 comments There's a difference between that and censorship.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censorship

On the wikipedia page for censorship, it specifically gives the example that governments censor "the Internet for a variety of reasons including national security, to control obscenity, child pornography"....

So there is no difference. That is certainly censorship. And it is certainly necessary in that case.

That censorship is necessary, it's the political and religious censorship that I disagree with. You cant hide the truth from people, that is wrong. But censoring child pornography yes that is necessary.

message 13: by Jake (new)

Jake | 92 comments I'm not saying that that wouldn't be censorship. I'm saying that pulling a whole website in and of itself is not censorship, it's killing a website because the owner was doing illegal things in real life. I think I will revise my statement, though: the government can pull it if it is clearly meant to be pornographic. But the bathing toddler? Still no. That's freedom of expression.

Well, I don't know how good of a job I'm doing here, but Fahrenheit 451 really made me aware of the evils of censorship. Especially as book lovers on Goodreads here, that's pretty horrific. Everyone should read that if you want to be scared senseless or become paranoid about censorship.

I went on a trip to Berlin a few years back, and we went to a library it was in this beautiful area of Berlin but I can't remember it very well. All I remember is outside the library is a glass floor looking down into a room with bookshelves that are empty, it is supposed to symbolize the Nazi book burnings and censorship they faced. That is the horror that made me aware of censorship.

That's so awful :'( I can't imagine a library...devoid of books.
