"A Cruel Thing" in the anthology edited by Eric Arvin, is a rare bird in our gay-lit world: a World War II historical story focusing on a team of plucky American soldiers virtually abandoned on Wake Island in the South Pacific at the start of the war. The twist is that there are two gay couples among them - and this story of gay soldiers - gay second, soldiers first - is a tale of love, acceptance, battlefield bravery and loyalty. It had me in tears, because you know what happens in war. It's not all darkness, not by any means. Beautiful, beautiful tale by a very good writer.
