I finished a week ago, and I've been thinking of a response to your question. I liked the book. It was a good story, but sad. I think there's an obvious lesson about the truth setting you free, and I think gets paired with the idea that it can be hard to tell what is right and what is wrong when your in the midst of things. The question i keep mulling over in my head is: can one bad decision make or break a life? And was Isabel's life "ruined" by what happened?
That is a good question. Did she loose her child or was she blessed to have had the experience of having her for those years? I think one of the blessings of faith is to be open and trusting because of our faith in God. If they would have reported everything right at the beginning might they have had a relationship with Lucy that while not being a parent child one might still have been fulfilling? Or was it better to be a parent for that little while even though it ended? We all face issues of trust all the time but not as dramatic as these.
I finished the book and felt the ending was good. Lucy did come back to find them when she had her own son. I think she may have looked at the "kidnapping" situation differently when she became a mother of her own and realized without them she would have not been alive.
