I have three parts that made me laugh out loud towards the end of the book.

"I stare forlornly at the windows of car 48, wondering how to break the news to Marlena that we now own an elephant..."

"Dear God. Not only am I unemployed and homeless, but I also have a pregnant woman, bereaved dog, elephant, and eleven horses to care of."

"Later that night, Marlena and I sneak into the menagerie and bring Bobo back to our stateroom.
In for a penny, in for a pound."

I think Gruen is great at subtle, dry humour.

Yup.
Actually - the opening line of Chapter 1 is one my total faves... "I am ninety. Or Ninety-three. One or the other." And then Jacob explains the mind slip that starts in your thirties (it is SO.TRUE...LOL).
I wish I had have notes some more faves through the book - I'll have to when I reread it.

This is my favorite line in the book by far:

I want her to melt into me, like butter on toast.
I want to absorb her & walk around for the rest of my days with her encased in my skin.

*sigh*
