Shadow Divers turned out to be a mixed bag for me. It's an amazing story and a great example of dedication and hard work. And it made me wonder how many other instances of history have been fudged and are not quite as accurate as we think. I only wish that the strong language that occurs in some parts had been toned down. I was not expecting that vocabulary! I marked out most of the cursing in my copy -- if anyone would still like to read it, you are welcome to borrow it.
PBS did a NOVA program a while ago about the Shadow Diver's experience called "Hitler's Lost Sub." Here is the website that goes with it: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/lostsub/
So now we shift gears to read Eric Patten's second book, The Legend Thief! And if you haven't read the first installment yet, Return to Exile, now is a great time to begin it! I have a copy if anyone would like to borrow it. I'm still reading The Legend Thief (we read a chapter of it at bedtime), but once we're done, I'll have that available to lend as well.
Here is the teaser for the The Legend Thief:
Sky has more monsters to fight--and lives to save--in the sequel to Return to Exile.
Sky thought he had problems before. "Before" as in when his uncle disappeared, he had to move to an odd new town with his family, and, oh yeah, it was up to him to make sure the world's deadliest monster didn't escape from his prison. But none of that compares to now. "Now" as in when the entire Hunters of Legend are coming to Exile with one mission: kill Sky. Well, Sky thought there was only one mission, but the longer he stays alive, the more he realizes that there is something else afoot. And all those friends that he kept in the dark to keep them safe? Turns out he might have to ask them to risk their lives yet again to stop an unspeakable evil from wreaking havoc on the world.
With art from the illustrator of the Percy Jackson series and praise from New York Times bestselling writers--including Brandon Mull, author of the Beyonders and Fablehaven series, and James Dashner, author of The Maze Runner and The Scorch Trials--The Hunter Chronicles blend bravery and humor into a breathtaking adventure.
Now, I really need your help to pick more books for the coming year! I'm going to list a few possibilities, but please feel free to give me more:
Daddy-Long-Legs The Wednesday Wars Rules Things Not Seen The Watsons Go to Birmingham The Cay When You Reach Me Son Bridge to Terabithia Mockingbird (This is NOT Mockingjay) Once Was Lost The Host Cold Sassy Tree Persuasion Ender's Game (Maybe too violent? But such a classic, and the movie is being released on Nov. 1)
Goodreads has a list of LDS Book Club Reads suggestions. They ask for "good books appropriate for LDS (Mormon) Book Club selections (morally clean and minimal curse words). Other desired characteristics include the following: appealing to large audience of readers, short enough or engaging enough to be read within one month's time, plot or topic provides a stimulating discussion rather than an argument, and usually found in libraries or second-hand book stores." Do any on their list sound good to you? http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/44...
Okay, so here's your homework! Please reply with your top 3 choices of books for us to read this coming year!
Thanks, Heather
