ERR argh. I can't figure out how to post in the EROTICA folder. LOL Sorry, I'll get it eventually.

I clicked post comment and nothing happens.

M

Jackie - Fire & Ice Book Reviews (jackiefireicebookreviews) | 0 comments You have to create your own topic under the folder. When you click on the folder, to the right there should say something like new Topic. Click that, and then fill out the information. I hope this is helpful.

Thanks Jackie. I think I got it! LOL I feel so technologically challenged with Goodreads right now.

So, writers, I'm new to all of this (wrote my first book last September). What tips do you have for me.

Also, what do you compose your novels/stories on?

How do you edit?

How do you publish?

Thanks!

M

J.L. Madore | 5 comments Hey Marisa,
I'm tech challenged and still just use MS Word. That's the industry standard and that's what I know. I bought Scrivner last year because half of my writing community use it and swear up and down that it's like no other writer's too you could possibly imagine.

Thing is...I can't figure it out. I've watched the tutorials and tried but not a lot of success. My Writer's group is hosting a workshop on Scrivner soon and I'll take it and see if that helps.

As for editing, I have a 5 person critique group, then I revise and beta with another half-dozen people, then I hire a pro for a copy/line edit (that runs 1500-2400$) then I revise and beta with another half-dozen people....then I publish.

Hope that helps,

JL Madore

Wow...yeah I'm new to this but there is no way I could ever pay that much to have my novels edited. I barely make minimum wage so it's never going to happen. I rely on family and friends to help me out. That's the best I can do.

I did a four person critique/edit with my first novel and then only my little sister for the second book. The first book has more errors than the second book did so I'm sticking with her. I suggested she become an editor because she really did a good job, that three others didn't do as well. ;)

I've never heard of Scrivner. I use Word as well. Still so new to all of this. I only write because one, I love it, two I had a story to tell, and three I just want people to enjoy my writing. I never intended to make $ off any of my novels. :)

Marisa:
I compose all of mine on paper with a pen. I could never get into starting on the computer because I can't write my notes all over it when I'm done unless I print and I can't print hundreds of pages 10 or more times.
I write the last draft on MW (Microsoft word) It's just easy to understand/ use.
I edit by sending it to several different people as, like you, I cannot afford the few thousand dollar editor. My first book was edited by my grandfather, an Advanced Literature teacher, and three close friends. I am trying to find a cheaper editor for my second but I'm not having so much luck. I know there are some errors in my books so I go in and edit them out and re-upload the file as readers point them out. I would rather it be perfect to begin with but I also make minimum wage :P
I published on createspace. It is really easy to use, has hundreds of images free for covers, and does the formatting, for the most part, for you. It's pretty much just copy and pasting into a pre-made word doc.

Well that is my two cents on it. I also never really planned on making money off of my work. Out of the about 650 copies that have been distributed; I have made maybe $50, which isn't even enough to have amazon cut a check. I hope to one day get a traditional publisher (my two hopes are random house and harper teen but it probably will never happen) but for now, at least for the series I am working on, I will stick to the self/ indie route.

Hi S.K.N,

Wow, I can't imagine writing all my books by hand. How many pages do you end up with?? Wow wow wow!

I make just above minimum wage, I totally get where you are coming from.

I'm trying to talk my sister into becoming an editor. She did a good job. But she would need to learn a lot.

Do you have your editors even comment on the story line or do you just have them stick with grammar, spelling, and formatting?

I decided to print with LuLu.com again. I don't like how complicated it gets when you want to use your own cover. LuLu.com was easy when it came to this.

Thank you for all the input.

Marisa

Jackie - Fire & Ice Book Reviews (jackiefireicebookreviews) | 0 comments On the group home page, under the description, it will say you are a member of this group, to the right click the edit button. Once you are on the edit screen, you will see on the left it will say leave this group.

Thank you Jackie. I can't keep up with all the groups I joined. I'd rather focus on this one and a few others that don't have as many posts.

BTW no wonder my books have speeding errors, I'm blinds as a bat! :)

I usually end up with around 500 pages per book which is all stuffed into notebooks and hidden in my closet which now has more papers than clothes, lol. I have them look for mostly creative stuff and have a specific person be just for grammar, spelling, etc. Although I recently had a professional editor recommended to me who only charges $1-$1.25 per page which comes out to around $200 when she's done. She is editing my second book now and from what I've seen, she is pretty good.

Is there a way, as the author, that I can give someone the Kindle version of my book via Amazon?

J.M. Stewart (authorjmstewart) Marisa wrote: "Is there a way, as the author, that I can give someone the Kindle version of my book via Amazon?"

Yup. You can send it to them as a gift. On the buy page, beneath where you'd click to buy the book, there's another link that says, "give as a gift."

Hi Jackie!

What is everyone working on/reading?

Jackie - Fire & Ice Book Reviews (jackiefireicebookreviews) | 0 comments Nothing this month. No one showed a interest in the group reads

message 26: by Marisa (new)

Marisa Oldham (marisaoldham) | 554 comments Mod
I had interest, just not enough time. :(
I'm still trying to get The Falling of Love BETA read and properly edited, I'm in Creative Writing II in college, work 10+ hours a day, and was watching True Blood and Dexter :)

Sometimes I really wish there was such thing as MORE time. Ahhh!

Jackie - Fire & Ice Book Reviews (jackiefireicebookreviews) | 0 comments Me too. I think I will try again later. The group is growing, so maybe there will be other people that is interested.

Hey everyone. I just wanted to let you all know I had surgery on Thursday. I've been dealing with a kidney stone since Labor Day. This is why I haven't been around. They had to surgically remove it because of the spot it was in, the laser couldn't reach it.

As soon as I'm all better I'll be back to help out Jackie and Shay and get some new stuff posted in the learning center.

I apologize for my lack of participation lately.

Is there anyone that can help me get page #'s on my document in Word. Without lines and having page 1 start on page 9 of the document? I'm going to lose my mind.
