I just finished a delightfully humorous middle grade age book. 'Madison Morgan: When Dogs Blog' by Pam Torres.
Many youth will relate and enjoy the plot.

The Last Invisible Boy could be fantasy, could be just another sad book, but either way it's great!

The Parker Inheritance by Varian Johnson. Half of it takes place in present day and half in the past making it both a contemporary and historical fiction novel.
