Leading up to the fall

Porcelain Glass; a place of cruel truths.

The city was named after its people, those born as if sculpted by the Gods themselves. In truth, the occupants of the city are a beautiful sight. They were different from other people and creatures... they held different qualities about their person... possessed different abilities. It only seemed right the land remain its own isolated fragment of the world, separated from the outside--a small piece of perfect placed upon a desolate area, apart from the conflicts and troubles the rest of the races. Time seemed to run on an entire different clock, untouched by everything--a sole place. An empire.

For as long as anyone remembers, the Royal Seat has been held in power by the name of Grace. Successors of the throne are that of the descendants, never before has the land been ruled by that of another great name. This of course, means a dictatorship. The current one sitting upon the throne is none other than Peter the Magnificent, a name feared throughout the kingdom in its own right.

The last few generations of the Grace family have been something of a... how can this be put delicately? Lets just agree the Grace children through time have begun to reshape the land, changing customs and past traditions. The process sourly became known as Modernization.

As you might have guessed, a place where people share different views can't exactly remain peaceful. Rumors began to spread and the Royals began to fear their power was dwindling... there were whispers of an overthrow. So instead of reaching out to their people, the Royal Grace's retracted into their castle and closed out their people. They began to protect themselves from the outside world, prioritizing themselves above their subjects.

As hinted to before, the people of the city possess qualities. By this, the definition is something of hosting supernatural abilities. The Grace Empire feared these people, knowing if there were to be any type of rebellion, these special individuals would be the determining factor. So naturally, you would want them on your side. But what would make them so inclined to join you?

There was a law placed by Peter the Magnificent, it stated those with these abilities would join the Royal Guard. Joining the Royal Guard meant protection, housing, resources... and undeniably, power. This system was fatally flawed, it took no time at all for the once beautiful land to fall to corruption.

The Now

To say things escalated quickly would be an understatement. Crime rates increased, as did the punishments relative to the illegal act preformed. Speaking out against the throne was treason, a crime punishable by death. Using your special abilities over the age of nineteen as a non-member of the Royal Guard, a crime punishable by death. Any attempt against the well being of a Royal or their protectors, a crime punishable by death.

The use of all special abilities was banned by the Grace. The only use of these powers were left to those at the ages eighteen and under, and those that were member to the Guard. What was your choice? To join a force so strong you had no chance of opposing them, or never use your magic again... it was like denying a part of your own soul. It was either that, or die. Or was there another option?

There are always those who dream of something more, but what else there? Porcelain Glass is all that is ever recorded... ever. No other species or type of races are spoken of, though it is rumored they're out there. But what if they're not civil? That's what keeps people here... that, and the Guard. With every passing month their numbers grow--the very definition of oppression. Under the last fifty years, the words justice, fairness, and equality have ceased to have meaning in the land of Porcelain Glass.

Though there is a lurking force spoken of in the shadows... they're called... the Runners.

One of your friends ever conveniently disappear before their nineteenth birthday? I wonder where they went.

Contrary to popular belief, Porcelain Glass isn't a terrible place to spend your life. It's still incredibly beautiful and some parts of the land are less occupied with the guard than others. There is a small sense of freedom some experience, though in the back of their mind they know it isn't fully complete. Some people can still live happily knowing that, good for them. Others can't... how unfortunate.

The point is, the picture painted isn't completely a dark one. Sure, there are those who experience daily troubles, but for some encounters with the guard are minimal if they happen at all. The only thing that really attracts the guards to a specific area is the people there. If there's talk of a certain individual with a special power, new faces start to appear around town. Morale of the story? Don't show off. There's also that incidence of rebellion, but lets not talk about that. Wouldn't want... unwanted visitors.
