William (acknud) I just wanted to get everyone's take on this. It sounds like a nasty bug but I am not sure I am buying into the pandemic cry yet. Yes, there have been widespread cases and some deaths but containment efforts have managed fairly well so far. What is everyone elses take on this?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 368 comments It appears to be worse in Mexico than elsewhere, and appears to have spread there in some cases person-to-person, which is a worry.

The fact that this virus is an H1N1 flu virus concerns me; the only other H1N1 that I'm aware of is the Spanish Flu virus. And we all know what that one did.

Latest I heard was that not only are most public facilities in Mexico City closed, but that the mayor was considering closing the city's subway.

I saw somewhere that they had shut down public eateries in Mexico but I can't find that article right now.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 368 comments I know Mexico City is closing its swimming pools, pool halls, etc. No mention of public eateries in this article ( http://news.aol.com/article/swine-flu... ) but it wouldn't surprise me.

Marti (stufsocker) It does sound like it's one hell of a bug, but it also sounds rather treatable (if the meds can stay on the shelves for the people who really need them). Something like 180 kids were absent from two schools in Queens yesterday, but I'm sure a fair number were preventative measures and the ones that did get sick are recovering.

Here is my conspiracy post! I foresee the govt. taking all the Tamiflu and distributing it as they see fit if this should get out of control. To me that would actually limit access to care.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 368 comments Rather treatable in the US; people are dying in Mexico.

Not sure if that's indicative of different strains of the bug, or levels in sickness before people first go to a hospital, or what.

Mass panic, death in the streets, dogs and cats living together...
I think that citizens are perfectly capable of screwing over fellow citizens on their own. Stockpiling is NOT the answer.

Vanessa They said on CNN the other day the higher death rates in Mexico could be caused by a number of factors including the relatively high altitude and pollution in Mexico City that makes respiratory ailments worse coupled with the level of health care there.

I'm frankly not real clear on what the H1N1 designation means. I'll have to Google that.

Kathy | 9 comments If I paid too much attention to this, I would go into panic mode. When I was ten or so (a LONG time ago), I would lie awake in fear that my appendix was going to burst. I didn't have fever or nausea; I was just recalling my mom's stories of her burst appendix. and I stopped watching hospital dramas years ago.
