SOS: Serious Overload of Series discussion

Finally, now resuming our monthly Rachel Caine buddy reads...I was starting to miss it! Paris and I will be reading the third book in the Outcast Season starting the week of June 24th. Feel free to join in anytime!

Oh, I've read the other two and really liked them. I wish I could join this! So jealous. I love Rachel Caine and her Weather Wardens.

Balls. I knew I was forgetting something today. Lol I'm having the roughest reading month ever. Life is all up in my reading business. But I have the book and I'm technically not in the middle of any other Kindle books at the moment so I should be able to read this soon.

That's ok Paris, I accidentally booked 2 buddy reads this week too. I'm just glad I ride public transport to work otherwise I wouldn't be reading at all! Hope everything's all good in your world?

I had no idea anyone was reading this series until it just popped up on my notifications. And like you, I am doing 2 buddy reads this week!!
I might be able to figure out a way to start it on Friday. My book budget is completely blown but I get new money on that day!! If not, I will definitely be peeking in.

All's good over here. I just seem to have a lot of things going on or popping up. And I've been inspired lately so I've been writing a lot more than usual, which is nice, but it's cutting into my reading. lol

We can just read it whenever y'all can, we can even push it back until Friday so Leslie can join if you guys want to. I'm easy breezy.

Gah, I'm so sorry Paris that this has fallen by the wayside. Just made a list of all the review books I have to do this month and there are 6, uh oh! I'll try and squeeze this in, otherwise just update your thoughts on this as you go along and I'll come back and do the same when I can.

August 4th works for me! My birthday is the 5th, so I'll have the entire week off from work so plenty of time to read. Reading's going well now, but I have so many books that I don't know what to read next. lol

Just picked this up today and good to get back into it. I absolutely LOVE the recaps that Ms Caine provides at the start of the book, really ties you back into the story.

I'm about 21% of the way through, Page 64:

(view spoiler)[Poor, poor Isabel. She's so broken after all that she's been through, and dealing with the after effects is almost as painful as seeing her go through all of that. Just from her childish innocence beforehand is such a big contrast to her distrust of everyone now.

Snake Girl was super scary, you could imagine the shock and horror that Issy would be feeling...but she didn't. Cos she's so jaded and broken that nothing really surprises her. (hide spoiler)]

I've been trying to read, but it's been busy at work. Totally lame. I'm like 4% in at the moment.

I just got past the part in your spoiler Jeann. (view spoiler)[Snake Girl was scary, but I think it was perfect of Cass to take Ibby there. I think it was exactly what she needed to see to give her an idea of what she could do. I was surprised though that there was another way other than Cass being the bad guy and forcing Ibby to go to the school.

It is really heartbreaking to see her be such a completely different child than she was before she was taken. That damn Pearl. (hide spoiler)]

Alright I'm on page 107 35% of the way through and the sadness when it comes to Ibby gets worse.

(view spoiler)[Poor girl isn't going to live until she's an adult, it's all a bit morbid now. It's going to take a real miracle for the author to write herself out of this one. Poor Luis surviving that entire family :(

And hey...if I was in Cassiel's situation, I'd do exactly the same. For some reason, I can see why she needs to take revenge, but unfortunately Luis can't. He needs her and knows she has to go, but can't let her go. What a tense and emotional conversation! (hide spoiler)]

I got to 43% last night and man is this a heartbreaking book.

(view spoiler)[The news about Ibby is just devastating and poor Luis. I can't imagine going through what he's going through. But then again I wish he could be a little more compassionate towards Cassiel. He was horrible to her, even though he knows what she's doing is right. It made me so mad. (hide spoiler)]

God and then the way Cassiel practically breaks at this point was so devastatingly sad. This was so well written given that Cassiel doesn't fully understand her feelings and what's happening to her. (hide spoiler)]

It is definitely heartbreaking and you will see that he's going to be acting out soon when you reach the 59% mark...

(view spoiler)[I am SO SO angry at Luis you would not imagine. We all know he's a fiesty guy and Ibby is his paramount priority, but seriously, encapturing a Djinn? That is against the warden code given how progressive they've been and most of all - that is totally against what Cassiel would feel being a previous Djinn! It's sick and perverse, a Djinn's worse nightmare. I can't imagine Cassiel ever forgiving him. (and he will have to do A LOT to warm up to me again) (hide spoiler)]

I'm at the 49% mark and we're getting busy at work. Looks like I'll have to finish this later. Dang.

I was so blown away by your spoiler (view spoiler)[I couldn't believe he'd do that. I was hoping that it was going to be an impostor or something and not the real Luis. I couldn't believe he would do that given how he supposedly feels for Cassiel.

Is she supposed to just sit there with you and hope that everything goes away while Ibby slowly dies? Is she supposed to let other kids go through what Ibby went through and is still going through? Yeah, I think we're on the same page here Paris. (view spoiler)[I don't know whether it's because Cassiel doesn't understand the extent of her feelings yet or because she loves Luis and Ibby and can't really process the betrayal, but we definitely seem a lot more upset than her at this stage.

I'm amazed that the author can make us connect with her in such a way that we feel more remorse and the depth of her pain. We all understand what she has to do but the way she explained once Djinn just love someone and they will never let it go kind of broke my heart for Cass.

Luis is doing enough sitting and whining and blaming for the pair of them, it's not like Cassiel has to sit there as well while other kids are getting abducted and dying. Where's the compassion? Maybe he's just really, really cut because of all the losses he's had in his life. I guess from that point of view he's just acting emotionally and not really understanding the logical side of what Cass needs to do.

And did Luis send those attackers after her once he trapped Rashid? I didn't really understand that at the time cos I was so annoyed. Why would he do that? (hide spoiler)]

I'm so glad that we are on the same page. (view spoiler)[I think she realizes she was betrayed, just not sure she understands the level. I think part of her understands what he's doing, but the capturing of Rashid could definitely be a dealbreaker.

He's definitely emotionally wrecked I think, but still dude, pull your head out and quit blaming Cass for doing the right thing. She's not abandoning you and Ibby, you jerk.

I also don't think that Luis sent those people after her. I think he knew they'd be after her and figured she'd take care of it. He didn't tell her cause he was pissed. (hide spoiler)]

I finished last night. Holy cow, Rachel Caine does not disappoint in the way she ends books. When can you read the next one? lol

I'm 92% of the way of the way through (view spoiler)[where Cass just went back to save Luis and Ibby at the school. Man that whole section about her at the camp was totally EPIC! Full of adrenaline. How scary were those kids with the powers...I really thought it was all over for Cass but woah, ASHAN of all people was Will! It was weird how they had a connection but now it makes sense - cos they're both Djinn.

When I think about it, Ashan killing those kids probably put them out of their misery. They're going to live completely twisted and damaged lives (or whatevers left of it after their powers).

Oh yeah, I nearly forgot about Luis and dickheadery after all! I guess we're going to go from it at the angle that we nearly lost our lives, and each other, now we realise what's important. I get that. (hide spoiler)]

Still a bit creepy/dark/scary that the focus on this is all about the kids. But it's handled masterfully.

Dude, just reading your spoiler brings back all the intensity. That's how freaking awesome Rachel Caine is. I love her adult books. I read up until book 7 in the Morganville series and it fell apart for me, but I kinda want to try them again after reading Weather Warden and Outcast Season. And hopefully the second book in her Revivalist series will be better than the first.

Just let me know when you can get to book 4. I might read ahead and take notes and stuff for when you can. Not sure I'll be able to wait. lol

I love her adult books too, and got all giddy when David was mentioned! I do miss my favourite book boyfriend and Joanne's warm, frank and hilarious overview. Oohh I actually haven't read her Revivalist series, but we can move on to that after this one. What do you think?

It's a shame you've read the Morganville series because that's another one I have to start but haven't yet. I have half the series on my bookshelf, and it seems like a lot of people have lots of love for that series. Did you end up backing the kickstarter on the web series? I put in $5 I think.

(view spoiler)[Yeah, it was really scary especially if that cult-like peaceful atmosphere can even affect a Djinn. How about those bodies under the ground *shivers* I think Cass is so practical that she took Luis's actions for what it was, him being emotional about her leaving.

I was wondering whether Will was an Earth Warden or something putting her and everyone else under his spell, but nope. How vivid was it when they both said that they've changed when being questioned for how convincing they were as humans? (hide spoiler)]

I wish there were more David and Joanne. It was so great seeing them early on, but I know they're super busy, so no such luck for us.

Ok I had to finish the book at lunch time and guess there wasn't much else to report from where I left off with, except (view spoiler)[that damned Luis managed to weasel his way back in because Rashid ended up saving them all lol! Guess that made up for it, and he was apologetic to say in the least.

That cliffhanger wasn't an "OMG I NEED TO READ THE NEXT NOW" cliffhanger, just classic Rachel Caine. I know what you mean about being in the heart of it all, I really do get absorbed into the book! (hide spoiler)]
