Diamond Drake (diamondthewriter) Hello, I'm Diamond Drake, the author of three dramatic, contemporary romance novels. Imagined Love is my debut novel, For the Love of Jade is the emotional sequel and the 2013 International Book Award Winner, and Love's Fool is the 2012 Editor's Choice and 2013 Indie Author finalist! I've dreamed of seeing my name on a book since I was in the first grade so this experience has been wonderful!
Thanks for the invitation to the group. I look forward to chatting.

Jackie | 11 comments Hi everyone! I'm Jackie Burney, a nurse by profession, but reading is my favorite thing. I live in Tennessee but Ohio is home. My family says that I am book obsessed, and they are right. I read with all of my senses so they get aggravated because its hard to get my attention when I'm into a good book. I'm excited about this group because I had not been exposed to African American classics & historical fiction except for what was required reading in grade school, so I feel like I'm playing catch up. I'm looking forward to the book recommendations and discussions brought forth by this group.

LaSonya Hello everyone. I'm LaSonya Woodom. I am a Processing Assistant IV at WorkSource East here in Goldsboro, N.C. (Division of Vocational Rehabilitation). My favorite hobby/pasttime is reading to the point that I take my Kindle everywhere I go. Paperbacks come second to my Kindle, as I still love the smell and feel of a real book. Looking forward to communicating and discussing book topics with you guys.

Joyce (enjoyceinglife) | 1 comments Hi, I'm Joyce Davis. I'm magazine journalist who works as a digital storyteller in higher education. I'm also the author of a teen novel. And, of course, I love to read! I'm in the beginning of researching a fictional biography I'd like to write, so I'd love to know of any good ones anyone can suggest I read. My favorite so far has been Jewel Parker Rhodes' "Douglass' Women." I look forward to connecting with everyone.

Kanita Carington-McDonald (kanitacaringtonmcdonald) | 142 comments Hello Fellow Readers!

I'm Kanita and I forgot to introduce myself when I first joined a few weeks ago...oops! Anyway, I absolutely LOVE to read. I am open to most any genre and enjoy reading any good book but African-American lit be it historical fiction, non-fiction, mystery or chick-lit, etc. tends to be my favorite. I do enjoy and take pleasure in the modern conveniences of technology and our digital world with audiobooks, Kindles, Nooks, tablets and such BUT, to me, nothing ever really beats the touch or feel of flipping the pages of a good "old-fashioned" book! Goodreads is great and my to-read list keeps right on growing but that's a good thing! Glad to be a member of the group! Looking forward to much wonderful commentary and more great books! Happy Reading to ALL! :)

Hyacinth (evangelisttaco) | 19 comments I read almost anything. I really like Christian fiction, thrillers, paranormal, etc. I LOVE to read. My new thing is reading more than one book at a time? Who does that?

Well, what about me...hmmm, let's see. I am a recent first time grandmother. I absolutely adore my grandson. I love youth ministry and actively participate. I love to read, travel, photography, eat...I know but I love food, especially tacos! I can eat them EVERY DAY! My life is simple. The older I get, the more I cherish the mundane things. I thank God for health and just being able to live and enjoy life. I am a Whitney Houston fan for life. I am part Jamaican and now live the lazy life with 1 1/2 jobs, lol!

Hello Hero, love the name by the way! And yes you are right, there aren't alot of action/adventure thrillers in the African American literature. Sounds like you had better get started writing it!

Veronica (veraj121) | 71 comments Question. Is this group just for African American books and authors?

message 43: by kisha, The Clean Up Lady (new)

kisha | 3909 comments Mod
Hello Veronica and thanks for joining. No it doesn't have to be all AfAm lit. Just mostly. Mostly wanting to stay away from street lit. I started the group because I have a passion for the past and in all the historical groups I'm in they rarely read AfAm lit. Yet most if the black lit groups I'm in mostly focus on street lit or they aren't very active. But no we don't have to zoom in on one type of book! Thanks for joining!

message 44: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (veraj121) | 71 comments I understand the street lit. I read so many of them. But now they all sound the same after awhile. Every once in awhile on pops up that is very good. There is a trilogy written by a new African American female author I highly recommend. If you like drama, you would like this. Where can I post this recommendation?

message 45: by kisha, The Clean Up Lady (new)

kisha | 3909 comments Mod
ooh that's a good idea. That's it! I'm starting a new recommendation folder! Thanks!

message 49: by Hero (new)

Hero Jenkins (HeroJenkins) | 8 comments OK... I've been in my cave for too long writing novels. What is street lit?

message 50: by kisha, The Clean Up Lady (new)

kisha | 3909 comments Mod
Ha! yes you have! It's basically urban literature that focuses on the street life. You know, drugs, sex, crime...that type of thing. Typically written by black authors.
