I'll definetly have one up when i finnish reading it, i was going to read it after a book i have on the go at the moment, but i read 2 pages just to see and went -'nope i have to read this now' I also have just watched the film version of 'Beloved' I'm so tired from it! I couldn't even formulate a review of any kind as yet haha and the book version of a favourite film of mine 'The color purple' should arrive this week :)

Thanks, It was really hard book to rate, i loved it one one hand, loved the rhythm it was written with and the 'uneducated' way of speaking and i loved loved the school stuff in it, then on the other hand i thought some of the profanity was really unessecary- if it didnt have such a great heart to the story i would have shut the book

I have just finished Kwame's Passage by Jerry Sarkwah. In the book, a Ghanian boy, Kwame is full of life. His tragic experience as an adopted child does not foil him. After being taken in by Rev. Mac-White Blackteng, he has the chance to bring the Spirit of God into everything he does. This coming of age story put me in the mind of a parable or folktale. If summed up, it would be about faith. Because he was encouraged to be religious, and studious, school was the only hope for Kwame. He prayed for all he wanted, and remained focused. I felt the story ended at a pivotal point in his life, and that left room for a sequel. I love the faith Kwame has to have as he hopes to save up for his future. Note: you may have to reread some parts to understand them. I would suggest this story as a YA read. It has a real feel, and it displays a struggle some teenagers cannot even fathom. This was my first e-book period, and I say 4 stars!

Yes I did finish and enjoyed the book. The format of the story telling (i.e. the prose) was a little different but as I progressed it became apparent what a powerful tale it was. One where we see our heroine in particular and Black people general dealing with the issues of daily life without the overt presence of the racist society which surrounds them. I would certainly recommend it!

I'm glad you liked it. And I too loved the fact that it purposely and unexpected with even flow, left out racism. She, the author, took a lot of heap for that which one major reasoning that she didn't get the broad audience she'd hoped for until after her death. I liked that she showed that their are more issues in Black America than those of racisms. That, of course in that time frame racism existed but it didn't have to consume you.

Yes, it was something of a surprise to find that her work was criticised by such greats as Richard Wright and Ralph Ellison. I understand this negative backlash would lead to her public obscurity for a period of time. Still many artists, writers (and the like) acquire an appreciation of their work in death which was never present during their life. I intend to start looking at some of her other work!
