My name is Shannon; I live in England, am currently eighteen years old, and in the possession of an eclectic library of five hundred strong (give or take a few, as they have the strangest habit of appearing randomly throughout the house).Filling in the ‘Personal Interests’ section when applying for jobs has always been a struggle for me, since my free time is literally just comprised of reading and painting. So you can imagine my delight when this position requires little else but my only main personal interest.
I do indeed suffer from bad posture thanks to the shifting one does when reading, but no great love affair commenced without some discomfort.
I can safely say, in my hearts of hearts, that my love and enthusiasm for the written word and the world they create would make me a great candidate for the job.
“And it occurred to him that there were two parts of being a better person. One part was thinking about other people. The other was not giving a toss about what other people thought.”
- Mark Haddon, A Spot of Bother
Hi! It’s Amanda from the Goodreads group here to apply for the moderator position.I think I’d be good for the job because, with absolutely no exaggeration, books are my everything. They are my happiness, my salvation, and also most of the decoration in my room, and I would love to spend even more time with them than I already do!
Speaking of which, not being enrolled in school until September, I have absolutely nothing but free time to spend helping out around the group and reading the books to help start discussions and to generally just offer my assistance in any way that I can. I would be honored to be a part of the effort to achieve your high quality standards :)
My favorite quote is actually from Cloud Atlas because it was just such a damned beautiful book, but this was possibly the most difficult decision I’ve made all day:
“My life amounts to no more than one drop in a limitless ocean. Yet what is any ocean, but a multitude of drops?”
Hi! I’m Trish, seventeen, and from Kansas, USA. Being a moderator sounds like something that would be fun to do along with my book review blog. Whenever I’m reading a book, quotes stand out to me and I write them down in a notebook; at one point in time I had quotes on my walls around my desk, but I took them down and put up words instead because I couldn’t decide which ones I liked better and they all wouldn’t fit haha!I’m online pretty much every day so I’m easy to communicate with quickly, reachable by goodreads, tumblr, or email. Whenever I’m a part of a group, I like to put in all effort. Groups about books are my favourites because I love discussing meanings and characters with other people since there aren’t many people in my physical life you like to. Interaction and participation are fun!
I often make edits of pictures so if you ever want me to make a poster for those monthly pictures, I suppose you could tell me what you’re looking for and I could try to do something with it!
Thank you for considering me!
I'd understand if this wasn't accepted - I am a tad late after all - but I've been working so much that I haven't really had time for anything else. In saying that, and realising that I'm an hour past the deadline, here we go..."I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by." - Douglas Adams
Friends, Romans, countrymen lend me your ears! and behold the tale of a young man, Harley, who breathed in poetry and lived in books. I am eighteen years old and currently live in Missouri, US. Reading is a passion of mine, I absolutely love it (although "love" is really quite the understatement). As anyone may ask, "Why do you enjoy reading?" And the answer thus: not only does reading provide an escape from the conundrum of everyday life, but it allows us entry into the very hearts and souls of the writers. From Homer to Hemingway, literature of all kinds transcends the material world and leads us onto what very well may be a religious experience.
Now enough of my personal feelings for reading, and into the "why". I'd love to be one of your moderators because as such, it's your responsibility to inform others of books or writings that they may not have read otherwise. And isn't that what everyone's duty is? To spread the love of art and literature to others? I like to think so. And in this journey of ours, friends, I shall not disappoint.
My favourite quote... My, my, that is certainly the hardest question I've had to answer this month. There are so many that I didn't even know where to begin... Although this does not come from a book, I constantly remind myself of this, as it has become one of my personal mantras:
"We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race - and the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for." - Dead Poets Society
