Abbi and Melanie will be buddy reading A Bride for All Seasons: The Mail Order Bride Collection by Mary Connealy, Margaret Brownley, Robin Lee Hatcher, and Debra Clopton.

1800s mail-order bride catalogs facilitated many happy marriages. Here are the stories of four couples who owe their wedded bliss to creative editing by"The Hitching Post "publisher.

And Then Came Spring Margaret Brownley

When mail order bride Mary-Jo Parker arrives in town she receives the shock of her life; not only is her fiance dead, he left behind an eight-year-old son he neglected to mention. But the biggest challenge of all is the boy s way-too-handsome uncle.

An Ever-After Summer Debra Clopton

Widower Matt McConnell wrote his ad with no room for misunderstanding Bible believers need not apply. But then Bible-thumping Ellie shows up on his doorstep. Matt s so desperate for her help that he accepts.

Autumn s Angel Robin Lee Hatcher

Luvena Abbott's privileged childhood didn t prepare her for the hardship she now faces as an adult, especially when it comes to being the guardian of her nieces and nephew. Marriage seems the only answer to her dilemma. Clay Birch hopes to change the hurdy-gurdy house he won in a poker game into the finest opera house in the Northwest, but he'll need help to do it. Could this unlikely couple actually be the perfect match?

Winter Wedding Bells Mary Connealy

David Laramie is looking for a woman to care for his children. In exchange he ll make her financially comfortable for life. But no woman wants to marry a dying man. Then Meganresponds to his ad. It seems his edited letter contained no mention of him dying.

Abbi Well this first novella was really cute! As usual I wish it was a longer but it was still good!

I didn't overly appreciate Mary-Jo's excessive superstitions but I do see how growing up like she did they would seem important and it was kinda cool how they played in at the end to make her realize how false they were.

That would be so horrible to lose to fiance's and I can see how it could make someone wary!

I liked how instead of just deciding to get married they decided to start a "proper courtship".

It was really cute! I also wish it was a little longer, but I still enjoyed it a lot. :)

I didn't really care for that either. Yeah, it was cool how she realized it was false in the end.

It would be horrible and she lost not one, but two fiances! I also can see how it would make her wary of getting engaged again.

That was nice. Definitely made it more realistic.

Melvin is SO unbelievable! The way he edited their letters was horrible! I'm glad that Mary-Jo found out that Dan didn't lie to her and it was really Melvin who was to blame.

I have to say, I laughed so hard when I was reading the "Glossary of Mail-Order Bride Advertising Terms". SO funny!

It was cool how Mary-Jo helped Eddie with his schoolwork. I can see how easy it would be to misunderstand what was going on, but I wish Tom would have been a little nicer.

I loved how Eddie was the one to suggest they steal Mary-Jo's sewing machine so she wouldn't leave. So clever!

Abbi I know! That was horrible! I was glad Mary-Jo figured it out too! Makes me wonder what Melvin will do to the next couples!

Haha yeah that cracked me up!

That was cool and it was very creative! I agree!

I loved that too!

The scene in the church when Eddie comes in and finds Mary-Jo was so sweet! I loved how well she was able to read him and find the right things to say!

I thought it was so funny when Eddie locked them in the barn! As soon as he mentioned the boys from school I guessed he was gonna try something.

I'm wondering what Melvin's going to do to the next couples too!

That was very sweet! I loved that too. :)

LOL! Yes! That was so funny! I'm glad that it actually worked and, even though Tom was quite mad at first, Eddie didn't get in trouble for it.

It was nice that Tom let Mary-Jo stay at Dan's house.

It was kind of scary when Tom got shot. I'm so glad that he survived, they caught Dan's killer, and everything turned out okay.

Abbi That was nice of him!

It was scary! And I'm glad for the same reasons you are! I liked the way the author didn't just make him blackout after getting shot like people usually do but actually made him blackout slower.

The description on Mary-Jo's father's job cracked me up! "the profession of hope and faith"!

I couldn't believe how Mary-Jo's father took her with him when he was gambling, though the story of how she won the game was funny!

I liked the slow blackout too.

LOL! That also made me chuckle - just too funny!

I couldn't believe that either. That story was funny - I'm glad that Mary-Jo kept her winnings and headed for her Aunt's. :)

Hmm...I can't really think of anything else to discuss. How about you?

Abbi Nope! Ready for An Ever After Summer?

Just finished. :)

Well, I really liked this one, though the romance did seem a little rushed.

I could not believe the way Ellie's aunt treated/blamed her for the deaths and it was just horrible how the kids had taunted her.

Again, Melvin just makes me shake my head with the way he changed their letters.

I thought it was really interesting how Maggie tried a pair of her husband's britches on after seeing Ellie wearing britches. Lem's account of the ordeal was kind of humorous (especially how he ran from her after he said he'd buy her a bigger pair - definitely not something to say to a woman!).

message 14: by Abbi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Abbi I felt the same way!

That was awful!

Yup!

Haha yeah that made me smile!

The mule cracked me up! I thought it was so funny how she set herself up as the protector and I love how she saved them at the end. And I was also amused when Matthew got jealous of her getting all the credit!

I thought it was sweet of Maggie to host the party to welcome Ellie and Lem's comments about it were funny. I loved how Matthew insisted on teaching Ellie to dance!

OK I'm sorry but Ellie's full name was just awful! I would totally go by Ellie too!

I couldn't agree more! That was funny and I also loved the way Prudy saved them in the end (it was also funny how Ellie said anything Prudy wanted she could have!).

I agree - it was sweet of Maggie. Yes! I LOVED how Matthew insisted on teaching Ellie to dance! :)

It was awful! I too would go by Ellie - much nicer.

I liked how Ellie and Matthew got married right away in this story and the feelings came later. Books like that are always interesting, I think. :)

It was horrible when Matthew got injured after getting thrown off of Ruthless. I thought it was sort of funny, but painful, how Prudy ended up dragging Ellie around after she tried to get her to help bring Matthew indoors.

message 16: by Abbi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Abbi I love stories like that too!!!

It was horrible! Haha I agree it was funny but painful! I was glad Matthew came to in time to get Prudy to stop!

I thought it was kinda amusing how after their kiss he passed out with a smile on his face!

I could not believe Matthew made the slip of saying he had hired Ellie! I'd have been hoppin mad! Ellie's rant after that was amusing but I have been mortified after cooling of and realizing what I'd said!

I liked how through her own experiences Ellie was able to show Matthew how he needed to not push Sophie away and be a better father!

That was amusing!

I know! What a horrible thing to say! I would have been angry too! I liked her rant and that she spoke her mind, but I would have been embarrassed too.

I liked that too. Ellie was definitely the right person for both Matthew and Sophie. :)

I liked how Ellie said she loved Matthew since she first read the ad - not because of the words (which Melvin wrote) but the promise they held.

message 18: by Abbi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Abbi I liked that too!

I loved that Ellie had a place to escape to when she was living with her aunt! Old Mister Clute sounded like a really nice guy and it was cool how he and Ellie were able to help each other!

I thought it was funny how when Ellie first came Matthew thought she was going to be all frilly when in reality she was probably one of the least frilly girls it was just what her aunt made her wear!

message 19: by Melanie, ✞Moderator, Avid Reader, & Blogger ✞ (new) - rated it 5 stars

Melanie (lovebeingvegan) | 9915 comments Mod
Completely agree! It was great that Ellie had a place to escape to and he did sound like a nice guy.

That was funny!

It was interesting how Matthew was nervous/queasy about getting married right away but Ellie had no qualms about it and thought the plan was perfect.

message 20: by Abbi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Abbi I hadn't really thought about that but it was interesting! Usually it's the other way around!

Well I can't come up with anything else-you?

I'm done now too.

I think this was my least favorite of the three novellas - it just seemed too rushed. I did still overall like it, though.

I was kind of disappointed that Melvin didn't make an appearance in this novella, but the letters Luvena/Clay wrote to him were interesting! :)

I liked how Clay helped Ethan play baseball.

It was very nice of Clay to let Luvena and her family stay at his house instead of making them find other arrangements.

message 26: by Abbi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Abbi Yeah I felt the same way!

Me too! The letters were interesting!

I liked that as well! It was amusing how despite his protests he actually was pretty good with the kids!

That was nice.

Clay's story of his past was pretty horrible but the testimony of how much God changed him was cool! I also found it interesting/cool how instead of making him worse the war actually made him want to be better. So often the stories are the exact opposite!

I was happy they were able to get the singer for the opening and it was convenient that Luvena already knew her!

message 27: by Melanie, ✞Moderator, Avid Reader, & Blogger ✞ (new) - rated it 5 stars

Melanie (lovebeingvegan) | 9915 comments Mod
I agree! You're right - it was interesting how the war actually helped him.

I was happy about that too! I kind of wish the singer would have been in the story and we'd have been able to see how the opening went...

I wish we'd have been told if Merry ended up doing piecework for the dressmaker.

It was great how much Clay cared and was worried when Luvena and her family went on that walk alone.

message 28: by Abbi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Abbi Yeah it would have been nice to know.

That was great!

It was nice how everyone seemed to welcome Luvena with open arms! That would be hard going to a new place like that and even harder when you were supposed to be married but weren't!

I was impressed how Luvena just jumped in and started cleaning! And it amused me when Clay came in and just waited for her to be embarrassed!

Melanie (lovebeingvegan) | 9915 comments Mod
Completely agree with everything you just said!

That was impressive! I really liked that she took charge and started cleaning the house without being asked. LOL! I loved how Clay waited for her to be embarrassed! So funny! :)

It's pathetic, but I can't think of anything else to discuss...what about you?

message 30: by Abbi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Abbi Good it wasn't just me! I can't think of anything either! Now for the one that made me want this collection in the first place!

Sounds good! I probably won't be able to discuss until Wednesday afternoon, so take your time. :)

message 36: by Abbi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Abbi Ok I think this was my favorite of the four! So good!

I could believe that Melvin took out that page of David's letter! I can see the tweaking that he did to the others but removing the fact that David was dying just seemed mean!

Quite an interesting first meeting! I was impressed at Megan's quick thinking! And I was amused when Zachary blamed it on her, such a little boy thing to do!

I loved how Megan refused to just let David lay down and die but instead made him work at getting better!

message 37: by Melanie, ✞Moderator, Avid Reader, & Blogger ✞ (new) - rated it 5 stars

Melanie (lovebeingvegan) | 9915 comments Mod
I think this one was my favorite too!

I completely agree - removing a whole page was very mean!

It was. I also was impressed by Megan's quick actions and, yes, that was very amusing. :)

Oh, I loved that too!! It was also great how she made the tea for him to drink - it seemed to really help him.

It was interesting how Meg thought the smaller house was theirs, at first, and her reaction when she saw their real house was priceless!

I loved how when David said the doctor he saw was the top doctor, Meg said "Well, I say he's a twit." LOL! She was so right!!

It was so nice how David got all those clothes and fabrics for Meg! I loved when she said she'd have made him bring it all back if they were still in Chicago.

message 38: by Abbi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Abbi That was great!

Haha I loved that too! It was so funny how that Doctor was a complete quack! The other doctor's comments cracked me up especially the cemetery one!

That was nice! I loved that too!

I loved how quickly the boys took to her! I thought they'd be a little more resistant.

Megan's reaction to having to ride the horse was so funny! I loved how she tried to get out of it by saying she needed to bake!

David's story about his past was very interesting and sad! To have to witness such a horrible thing would be awful and I can see how it would make him want vengeance, but I'm glad God changed his heart!

I loved what the other doctor said too!

Yeah, I kind of thought it would take the boys longer to warm up to Meg too. Glad they got along right away!

LOL! That was one of my favorite scenes! I loved her reaction and how she tried to scheme/bribe her way out of riding - glad David still made her do it. It was also interesting how the horse she rode was super slow.

I agree!

I thought it was so sweet how David and Meg said their vows to each other again near the end of the book.

I loved how we found out that Meg is expecting a child! David's reaction was great and I just loved this ending. :)

message 40: by Abbi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Abbi That was so sweet!

I loved that too! And David's reaction was awesome. I agree this ending was great!

I absolutely loved David and the boys reaction to Megan's cooking! And it was amusing how David said she could tell the cook anything she wanted as long as she cooked like that!

I liked how Megan did her best to distract the boys whenever David was struggling!

Oh, I loved that too! That was so funny! ;)

I liked that too. It was very thoughtful of her.

I felt bad for Megan and how after raising/caring for her brothers, now that they are older and married, she doesn't even see them or know where they live anymore.

message 42: by Abbi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Abbi Yeah that was sad! You'd think they would be a little more considerate!
