Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments TA DA! It's pnce again time for nominations. Let's see what we can do to keep the process smooth. Please no Young Adult books, so check to see how books are shelved. We go by how the good folk at Goodreads shelve the books. If the first or second largest number of shelves is categorized as YA, then the book will be considered as YA and thus not eligible for our group read.

As usual, books must be seconded. You must link the book so that group members can check it out. Also, if you would describe the book a little and tell us why you nominated it, it would be helpful.

Books must be available in a variety of formats and in a number of countries.

I will close nominations after 12 books are nominated and seconded, and as usual, I will close the group to new members during the voting process.

Please check the group book shelf to see what we've already read. Also check our sister group as most of us are members of both groups.

PLEASE!! Read this post and read through all posts before posting.

Pickle | 87 comments i notice there isnt anything by Poul Anderson on either bookshelf so for that reason, if possible, i would like to nominate: Three Hearts And Three Lions by Poul Anderson

King of Thorns (The Broken Empire, #2) by Mark Lawrence we read the first book ages ago."

I was just going to nominate this book.. I'll second it..

I still have to read the first one though to catch up if it gets picked.

message 4: by Camilla (new)

Camilla Hansen (malazanshadowdancer) I'll vote for King of Thorns as well.

message 5: by Thomas (last edited Jun 17, 2013 03:48PM) (new)

Thomas Drinkard I'll nominate "The Illearth War (Chronicles of Thomas Covenant)".

message 6: by Clare (new)

Clare dooley (claredooley) I'll vote King of the Thorns, it's been in my tbr list long enough:)

message 7: by Cerys (new)

Cerys Lys (cerysdulys) I don't know how many people liked Kushiel's Dart from April, but Rhapsody Child of Blood (Symphony of Ages, #1) by Elizabeth Haydon , by Elizabeth Haydon is similar and pretty neat. It's got romantic tones to it sometimes, but more of a classic, epic fantasy adventure setting overall. It's the 1st in the Symphony of Ages series.

I'd like to nominate it, if possible!

message 8: by Greg (new)

Greg Strandberg (gregstrandberg) I'll nominate His Majesty's Dragon.

His Majesty's Dragon (Temeraire, #1) by Naomi Novik by Naomi Novik

I've been intrigued by this book for awhile now and it got pretty good reviews when it came out in 2005. It nearly won the Hugo when it came out but lost out to Vernor Vinge and Rainbow's End
Rainbows End by Vernor Vinge

message 9: by Julie (new)

Julie Powell (julie_powell) I nominate Collapse by Richard Stephenson http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13...

A fantastic read.

Please check the bookshelf. His Majesty's Dragon has already been read.

message 11: by Greg (new)

Greg Strandberg (gregstrandberg) My bad. I'll throw this one out there then. I liked Tigana and have meaning to read another of his for awhile now.

The Lions of al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay by Guy Gavriel Kay

message 12: by Mike (the Paladin) (last edited Jun 17, 2013 08:24AM) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments I've nominated The Ten Thousand several times. I finally went ahead and read it on my own, LOL. I like it it's an excellent action read. Lot's of blood, sweat, grime, stink and violence. It's a fantasy take on a well known account from ancient Greek history/legend.

The book is very light on magic, no wizards slinging spells, no sorcerers in battle throwing fireballs. The magic is understated. There are several fantasy races involved in the action.

As I said I like and intend to follow up the trilogy...so:

The Ten Thousand (The Macht #1) by Paul Kearney

message 13: by Mark (new)

Mark | 4 comments I will second anything by Kay. Tigana is still one of my faves. Lions of al-Rassan is also excellent. Kay makes historical fantasy approachable. Wonderful stories.

message 14: by Kim (new)

Kim I'll second The Ten Thousand!

I would second this as it is a must read if you are a fantasy fan.

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments I would like to propose The Written
The Written by Ben Galley

This is a young Goodreads author. It is quoted as being about magic and monsters with drugs, love and war.

message 18: by Greg (new)

Greg Strandberg (gregstrandberg) All of these books sound interesting; it'll be hard to choose!

message 19: by Amy (new)

Amy M I'll second Rhapsody! SoA is a great series.

message 20: by Mark (new)

Mark Would like to go old school and go for Brak the Barbarian (Brak the Barbarian, #1) by John Jakes

message 21: by Joe (new)

Joe (Roomsmoke) I would like to nominate Elizabeth Bear's Range of Ghosts. The setting has a Mongal/Khanate theme.

message 23: by Olga (new)

Olga Godim (olgagodim) | 85 comments I nominate All the Paths of Shadow by Frank Tuttle. An original fantasy, funny and absorbing.

message 24: by Mark (new)

Mark Lawrence (marklawrence) | 117 comments I'll second The Written - a self published title by a hard working young author I've met during the only hour I've ever spent in a convention!

message 25: by William (new)

William (ivelostmyfuzzybunnyslippers) I nominate The King's Bastard (King Rolen's Kin, #1) by Rowena Cory Daniells The King's Bastard

message 26: by carol. (new)

carol. Olga wrote: "I nominate All the Paths of Shadow by Frank Tuttle. An original fantasy, funny and absorbing."

Second. I haven't read this series but I adore his Markhat detective series, so I'd be willing to try it.

message 27: by Matthew (new)

Matthew (killerbat) I honestly cannot decide between the Ten Thousand and the King's Bastard, either will work good for me... I will probably read both

message 28: by [deleted user] (last edited Jun 17, 2013 06:06PM) (new)

To be honest, I'm not sure I'll wait until August to read this book. The plot is one of my favorite subjects: Time Travel. Here is the book I want to nominate. It's a brand new book.

The Shining Girls by Laura Beukes.

Thanks. Apparently it's shelved as Science Fiction on Goodreads.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments I looked it up after Ronhummer nominated it. Apparently it's considered sort of a "genre bender" being under science fiction, Fantasy and horror.

I reserved it at the library but there are 6 ahead of me so it will be a while before I read it, LOL.

message 33: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (curlykew28) I would love to nominate: Back Bay by William Martin.Back Bay I almost missed my bus twice today reading this book. It is one that keeps you reading to find out...

message 34: by Brandybuck (new)

Brandybuck In light of his recent passing, I'd like to nominate one of my favorite books by Jack Vance: Suldrun's Garden (the first book in the Lyonesse trilogy). This is the book that turned me into an avid Vance fan.

Dawn (curlykew28) Dawn wrote: "I would love to nominate: Back Bay by William Martin.Back Bay I almost missed my bus twice today reading this book. It is one that keeps you reading to find out..."

I do hope someone will second this book!

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments I looked at it but it didn't look like fantasy. Is it?

message 37: by Nicole (last edited Jun 17, 2013 09:27PM) (new)

Nicole I would like to nominate The Child Thief The Child Thief by Brom by Brom

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments I'll second Suldrun's Garden.

message 39: by Darren (new)

Darren I would like to nominate The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman (if I can since it's only just been released).

message 40: by Baelor (last edited Jun 17, 2013 11:47PM) (new)

Baelor I would like to nominate The Lost Books of The Odyssey by Zachary Mason. Mason is in computer science but treated the Homeric epics with an incredible amount of literary knowledge and grace.

The book is an collection of short stories (some mere pages) that involve the Homeric heroes. The stories are often extremely bizarre, but there is an order/structure and point to them. The joy is in discovering what it is (I still have not succeeded for all of them).

The book transforms the reader. I have never encountered anything like it at all. The possibilities for post-reading discussion are innumerable.

Daniel (dward526) William wrote: "I nominate The King's Bastard (King Rolen's Kin, #1) by Rowena Cory DaniellsThe King's Bastard"

Officially seconded :). It will be tough between the ten thousand and this one. Been meaning to read both.

I read Rhapsody by Haydon last year, and I agree that it is a 'classic style' fantasy book with romantic undertones.

message 43: by Mark (new)

Mark Lawrence (marklawrence) | 117 comments I'll nominate The Whitefire Crossing!

The Whitefire Crossing (Shattered Sigil, #1) by Courtney Schafer

message 46: by Sadie (new)

Sadie I second The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman. I've been really excited to read this one!

message 47: by Louise (new)

Louise May I ask a question please? Does it have to be a book that's available in hard copy from bookshops, or is hardcopy from Amazon, and then Kindle, Smashwords etc for e-books OK?

Thanks

Louise

It has to be available in a variety of formats, hardback, paperback, ebook; although ebook isn't necessary. In spite of the popularity of them, not everyone wants to read electronic books.

Although I have found that they help with the space considerations in my personal library :P
