Stephen King is my all time favourite. I'm loving Under the Dome TV series too! I have never heard of Richard Laymon,. I will look him up. Another of my favourites is Roald Dahl. That man had a wicked sense of humour.

Stephen King, Wally Lamb, Pat Conroy
Jane Smiley, Amy Tan, and Armistead Maupin for general fiction. In the horror genre, T. E. D. Klein and Peter Straub.
i think this question itself is not correctbecause the ability of authors will varies by the genres they choose
(eg.a spiritual writter like deepak chopra can't handle a crime thriller .....in the same way others)

I'm a bit obsessed with Nora Roberts. I think I own nearly all her books. I just love her simple love stories. They always make me smile.
I also love George R.R. Martin at the moment and Karen Rose.

The names are not in chronicle orders.
See, I can't pick just one! John Green
AS King
Laurie Halse Anderson
Robin Benway
Those are mine. If I HAD to pick one...oh jeez...I guess John Green. However, that's only 'cause I've known of his work longer than the others'. And also because I think if I ever met him, I might just hyperventilate and start babbling all kinds of random compliments to him.
Yeah, that would potentially be a dangerous situation.
I seriously do respect AS King though. Really and truly. Her work is awesome - I've read all her books to date!
I enjoy Stephen King, Maeve Binchy, Dean Koontz, Diana Gabaldon, Yann Martel, Khaled Hosseini, and recently discovered Danielle Steel.
I love books by Kathryn Lasky. Also some by Micelle, who wrote the book, Wolf brother. Kathryn Lasky is a great author!
