Thanks, Kate, for suggestions. Now that I see the titles by Vonnegut and Atwood, I think I've read them, but will have to double-check. Probably worth re-reads in any case.

I have Alice Hoffman's Blue Diary on my TBR, but she generally just incorporates themes from fairy tales and does't follow their plots very strictly.
Something someone told me made me think Mr. Fox by Helen Oyeyemi had something to do with Bluebeard, or at least was based on a similar tale, but I don't remember exactly what was said, and it's still on my TBR.
The story "Bluebeard the Knight" by Alfred Döblin. You can find it in his collection Bright Magic: Stories.

Bluebeard's daughter is the main character but he does play a part in this fun book.
