Please post nominations in this folder for books you would like to see the group read for August 2013. You may certainly renominate a work that has been suggested before, provided we haven't already read it. However, we request that you do not nominate anything published within the last 3-4 months. We are an international group with diverse resources. Newer books are not always available to everyone.

Nominations will be closed on June 26.

Rohan (rohannigam) | 26 comments I am going to re-nominate "American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer" by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.

if not that,
The Day the Universe Changed: How Galileo's Telescope Changed the Truth by James Burke (I am not sure if this has already been covered before)

Joel Reiner | 1 comments How about "Your Inner Fish" by Neil Shubin. A great evolutionary/developmental biology book. One of my favorites, and used copies are readily available. From Amazon:
Why do we look the way we do? Neil Shubin, the paleontologist and professor of anatomy who co-discovered Tiktaalik, the “fish with hands,” tells the story of our bodies as you've never heard it before. By examining fossils and DNA, he shows us that our hands actually resemble fish fins, our heads are organized like long-extinct jawless fish, and major parts of our genomes look and function like those of worms and bacteria. Your Inner Fish makes us look at ourselves and our world in an illuminating new light. This is science writing at its finest—enlightening, accessible and told with irresistible enthusiasm.

I've read some of the pieces. It's been my in between book - reading it in between the library holds that keep coming in. I'd vote for it.

Margie In addition to supporting Six Easy Pieces: Essentials of Physics By Its Most Brilliant Teacher, I'll also suggest Quantum: A Guide for the Perplexed. I'm so very into sub-atomic things these days.

Okay. We've already got 10 good candidates, so I'm going to close nominations early.

You can vote for your choice at the following poll, which will close on June 27.
