Which authors do you think are most over-rated...?? And why?

message 2: by Cath (new)

Cath (cathastrophic) Mary Higgins Clark.

Love the author, have most of her books (about 30ish on her 55 books) and like them.... but very redundant... the kind of book you pick up and know the murderer, the plot and end before even getting in the fourth paragraph.

I've heard of her but never tried her books. What genre does she write ?

message 4: by Cath (new)

Cath (cathastrophic) murder-mysteries, Classics amongst classics. They are all fun reads, but it's very redundant

Ok, maybe I'll give her a try.

Natalie Passmore | 68 comments There are a lot of authors like Mary Higgins Clark who just write the same book over and over and keep getting published. I'm ok with it as long as they can write.

EL James has to be the most overrated for me. Fifty Shades was so badly written. So so terrible!

Fifty Shades Trilogy lacks a little on good story (especially the first book) and execution. I actually loved the 2nd and 3rd books.....though even I agree wid you, EL James definitely is over-rated. People fuss about her too much as compared to the books she writes...

Even I think Chetan Bhagat is a really over-rated author...I've never loved his books that much...and surprisingly, according to me, I thought that Five Point Someone is the worst of the lot....the other books were still pretty nice. And I really hate it when people make a big issue of him and his books....I mean, he isn't that good!!

message 20: by Nila (new)

Nila | 4 comments I loved James Patterson books but most of his books I enjoy the most were written by him alone.James Patterson better when he writes books by himself not with a co-author, as famous as he is why write with someone else when your better alone? I don't get it....

message 21: by A, Crazy. (new)

Yes right....some people don't write that good books with others as compared to the books they write themselves alone....so you think James Patterson is over-rated?

Gayathri (elgeewrites) | 35 comments Yes CB is over rated. Except for Five point Someone, I never really cared for his books. FPS survived only because it beat the crowd in timing. Now you find so many books strewn on the same plot. Had it arrived a little later, it wont have caused even a ripple.

Anyway coming back to CB, I really love to hate him, his so called FB fan following and most of all people who think they brand themselves book lovers, reading only HIS books. I have friends who do that, 'reading one or two of his novels and then get settled for the well read tags'. I am not sure what irks me more - people reading his books and blowing his trumpets - or the Man himself and his so called advices to the community.

Oh boy I do love to hate him.

Gayathri (elgeewrites) | 35 comments Thanks Ruchi!

Another Overrated book according to me was Freakonomics A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything by Steven D. Levitt

I was never able to get past first 50 pages.

*ducks and hides* Freakonomics fans should excuse me! Dont throw your books at me!

Surprising, how everyone seems to like Chetan Bhagat's Five Point Someone and I'm the only one who likes all his books except that......:P :P

the first book i read of his was FPS. after that when i read the other books i felt that all have the same story just diffrent context. thus FPS continues to be liked as that came to be read first.

Saima Siddiqui (sensationalsaima) 1) Shobhaa De, because she writes books that are way too over the top, and well, vulgar, in my opinion.

2) Chetan Bhagat, because his creations are average. There's no novelty in his work, still he's appreciated by masses for God knows what.

i completed 3 mistake in 6 hours and said "what a crap"
and same with revolution 20 20 but two states was good

message 38: by Gayathri (new)

Gayathri (elgeewrites) | 35 comments @Anuj Exactly the same reaction I had.

In fact I was feeling sleepy when I read 3 mistakes. Nothing to keep me interested - dry and drier. Rev 2020 was more like re-watching an already watched flop Bollywood movie. I almost knew intuitively what was going to happen and every twist was a cliché.

Two states made me smile at different places, though at many times I found it too redundant - but definitely lot better than the other three - one night, 2 mistakes & Rev 2020 (btw what was the revolution in there?)

message 39: by A, Crazy. (new)

Even i loved Rev. 2020 a lot. I thought 3 mistakes was better and 2 states was best of the lot. One night was unnatural - and too common, but still, not that bad. Five Point was really boring....

my fav from CB is "one night" it did talk on some serious issues

I'm so sad adding her to the list but yeah, there she is - Kathryn Stockett for The Help.

Jennifer (bplayfuli) I think you'd have to evaluate James Patterson as a brand rather. Some of the writers who publish under his name are great, others, not so much.

I don't like Chetan Bhagat much. Some of his stories are good, but I know many people who think all his works are masterpieces. As for Dan Brown, I liked his DaVinci Code well, Angels and Demons not so much though.

message 49: by Feliks (last edited Apr 29, 2014 07:52AM) (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) Ruchi wrote: "Which authors do you think are most over-rated...?? And why?"

Most (if not all) of today's 'franchise/series' genre authors (paranormal romance, BDSM, etc) authors are over-rated to a colossal degree. I suggest its probably because the readers flocking to them are not yet well-read. Its a 'lemming' fan effect. [On the other hand, maybe more experience wouldn't change a thing? Too many Americans will always be trend-followers and read books purely for reasons of cachet; for the sake of being up-on-the-latest-gossip. There's always a 'race on' to meet that lowest-common-denominator culture found-at-newsmedia-level].

The bottom line is that at this point in the internet era the audience itself is highly dubious and their opinions can in no way be relied on as trustworthy. They're applying no scrutiny to what they're offered: how many people assume '50 Shades of Gray' is 'original'?

I agree with you a lot...I read a lot of fantasy/paranormal but have never been that hyped or crazy about any of the authors (though I may love the books). The hype and fame of such authors on GR itself amazes me, I mean how CAN people be SO crazy about such authors....I mean, the stories and characters may be good but usually such authors don't have good writing. So, yeah, I guess the whole group (Stephenie Meyer, Cassandra Clare, Richelle Mead, Becca Fitzpatrick etc etc) are all over-rated though I love the stories of some of the authors I mentioned above.

And don't even get me started on Fifty Shades of Grey...:P:P
