Imari (yonna7) | 26 comments Has anyone read Desiree? It's by Annemarie Selinko (published in 1953). You should also try the Ingo series by Helen Dunmore (Ingo was first published in 2005). I absolutely love every book by Michelle Moran (though Cleopatra's Daughter left me feeling very depressed. Books that focus a lot on politics do that to me.).

Imari (yonna7) | 26 comments Asch's Anti-Paradigm (JennTheAwesum) wrote: "I've never heard of Desiree. was it good?"

Yes, it's very long. It details the life of a young french girl (Desiree) who was born the youngest child of a silk merchant but became the queen of Sweden. It talks a lot of her relationship with Napoleon and other World leaders at the time (personally and politically). Great way to see how an analytical mind and wise person is created.

Quitillian Blue Have you ever heard of...
Fell by David Clement Davis
Its a sequal to the (little known) book, the sight. Though It's sort of silly, Fell is a fun easy read.

Quitillian Blue Also, Have you heard of "The Book Thief" .Now that is a very very good book. Not very popular though.

You should, unless you hate sad books (I am ashamed to say I cried at the end)

message 17: by Lina (new)

Lina (booksnotlovers) Plays in general. People read too little plays, and some of them are very, very good, and not at all boring like Shakespeare usually is. My top ones are Death of a Salesman, The Good Person of Szechwan, The Threepenny Opera and Betrayal. Since they are plays, not a lot of people have thought about reading them! But please do, seeing as they are amazing!

I read the Sight! I thought it was kinda dark, so I ended up never getting Fell... was it better than the sight?

I think I have that one on my to-read list:) Everyone keeps talking about how sad it is, so I've been kind of hesitant to actually read it.

Have any of you read Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1) by Susan Ee ? It's a really great book. It's getting to be a bit more well-known now but it used to be pretty much underground.

message 21: by Lina (new)

Lina (booksnotlovers) I don't know if this is out in any english-speaking contries, but it's an amazing book.

Mannen som elsket Yngve (The Man Who Loved Yngve) by Tore Renberg

It is the most amazing story ever. About Norway in the 1989-1990's, trying to turn the decade. About rock music, love and everything that is wrong and good in the world. AND ASJAKGHKA. This is my favorite book.

*WARNING* If you add it to your read or to-read shelf, you start getting a lot of recommendations for random German books.

Oh my goodness!! YES!!! I just recently happened across Ruby Red and (as I am very timid about trying new/unknown (to me) authors) finally decided to try it out and order it. OH MY GOSH! It was pretty amazing. I finished it in like a day and then (if you've read it, you know) was ready to BLOW cause I hadn't had the guts to get the second one without tasting the first one first. So, I immediately got Sapphire Blue and am now dying to get my hands on Emerald Green...oh, sweet October, you cannot come soon enough!!!

Oh, and an interesting thing I found was that the translator for the Ruby Red books is the same as the translator for Cornelia Funke's books. (She's one of my favorites!)

Rebekah | 19 comments Song of the Sparrow by Lisa Ann Sandell is a great stand alone novel! It puts a new POV into Arthurian Legend that I loved because it involves all the people I loved, (Merlin, Arthur) but puts Sixteen year old Elaine as the only girl in Arthur's camp. Loved it!

I love fantasy books, I'm going to have to look that one up!

message 37: by Bookishlor (new)

Bookishlor Shade's Children is one of my favorites. Enjoy! You will be hooked within the first pages.

Also The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley. If you like that one, then read the prequel The Hero and The Crown. They are both female coming into their own and discovering powers they never had kind of books.

Right now I'm in love with any Victoria Laurie books! Stumbled upon her wandering through the Mystery section in the library. She has two mystery series that are fun and super quick reads - Ghost Hunter ("What's a Ghoul to Do?" #1) and Psychic Eye ("Abby Cooper, Psychic Eye #1) mystery series. The characters feel like your best friends.

Lina (booksnotlovers) I feel Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan is greatly ignored. It's funny and amaazing. Not as amazing as the rest of John Greens books though, but it is very good.

I am sorry but this is not great in any way. I started to read it but it was terrible. I am a purist when it comes to vampire books and this one is a teenage romanticized tale and quite-flawed book. It (and the series) goes against all the traditional and time-honored vampire lore to present a cleaned up teen world of vampires and werewolves.
