I agree - The Name of the Wind is fantastic!! If you like lord of the rings you should love it! As for sci-fi try China Mieville's The City and the City, that's what got me started! :)

Thanks, Aubrey Rose and Emma! I looked up your suggestions and they sound very interesting. :) I'll be keeping my eyes open for them next time I go to the bookstore.
Welcome!
The Name of the Wind is a great choice. I'll add
Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb
Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch
Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson
Riyria Revelations by Michael J Sullivan
For SciFi, I really haven't read a ton. Just finished Feersum Enjinn by Iain M. Banks and will certainly read more of his work. Also enjoyed:
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
Old Man'sWar by John Scalzi
Altered Carbon by a by Richard K. Morgan

I'm definitaly going to check out The Name of the Wind now. Three people have mentioned it!
I like the sound of your suggestions, Lisa. I've actually been looking for Mistborn for a while now. And Riyria Revelations sounds really good too. Also, Old Man's War seems like it would be unique. I wasn't expecting it to actually be about an old man fighting in a war. It's made me curious. :) Thanks for the recommendations!
I really enjoyed Locke Lamora but didnt like Name of the Wind at all.A few recommendations for fantasy:
Sci-fi
anything by John Wyndham
For science fiction, I'd recommend Iain M Banks, starting with his first Culture novel, Consider Phlebas. If you like him, Neal Asher's Polity books may also be to your tastes, starting with Gridlinked. (Not his best book, but he hits his stride soon enough.)
Ubik! Now there was a book that left me feeling a little mentally unravelled by the end. He plays with your head, does old Philip K Dick.
For fantasy, I'm going to suggest:-The Name of the Wind
-Game of Thrones
-The Lies of Locke Lamora
The Night Circus
-The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making
-The Princess Bride
And for sci-fi:
-Old Man's War
-Ender's Game
-The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The list of the two is really endless; I'll stop there before I get really carried away. ;) Good luck!

But anyway, there are so many interesting book suggestions! Yikes! I don't think I know where to start now. lol Thanks everyone!

I bought NOTW and Lies of Locke Lamora at the sametime due to a 241 deal. I loved locke.. it was funny, well paced, good scenes and a plot, all the opposite of NOTW imo.
NOTW main protagonist is a Gary Stu.. it was horrible and was annoying, again the opposite of Locke who was fun and witty.
Don't let one comment put you off Name of the Wind. You can tell by the book and the author's popularity that it is loved by nearly all. It's an awesome story with one of the best fantasy characters in recent years.

I bought Lies of Locke Lamora the other day. :) I found The Name of the Wind too, but Lies of Locke Lemora was cheaper, so that greatly influenced my choice there.
You'll love Lies. Everyone does, I don't think I've found anyone yet who didn't. NotW is more divisive, so maybe try that one later. I hope you enjoy it!
I must be one of the few people who didn't really like Lies of Locke Lamora. I made it through the character origin, but once I got into the first caper I just wasn't interested.I will say that what I read is very entertainingly written, hilarious even. My disinterest is really more about not being into crime capers.
Hi, I'm not sure if I'm breaking protocol by recommending my own books but I'm new to the group and hope this is not the case. I came across your thread and I could see that you were interested in fantasy. I have written the 'Magic' trilogy a series of fantasy books which other readers say are a cross between LOTR and Harry Potter. I thought they may interest you and you will see I have great reviews in the UK and in the US. The first book is called Sinners of Magic which is about a young sixteen girl who parents are from a world parallel to ours. One the day of her birth the elders banish Crystal to our world to live with the plain folk. Find out why and what devastating consequences followed ...
I hope my little taster has ignited your interest and I look forward to perhaps chatting about the books.
Best wishes,
Lynette Creswell

Just saw your message now but i just finished reading a really good vampire/scifi series that had a very original idea of how they came about and was full of action. It was a 9 books series but you can get them in 4 Omnibus editions like I did pretty cheaply on Amazon. It's called the mortis vampire series. Mortis meaning death in latin. woah great series! loved them all!

Will you please watch my MW books trailer on YouTube. The song/poem is called Full Moon Bloodlust. I wrote the poem, then turned it into a song and played the drums in the studio recorded song.
When the moonlight strikes me, I am filled with power. In an evil age, in my darkest hour. Death and Destruction are the pleasures of my life. A lonely life filled with agony. Here I stand upon this Ledge with sword in hand I hereby pledge. That in the full moon's waning light. I shall make my Sacrifice. The Fog drifts down the hills into my dark domain. My senses sharp and I Insane. Into the woods I go with the moonlight as my guide. I now creep like the mist and from my wrath you can not hide. I shall avenge all I have lost. Behold the coming of death with your now ending immortal life. I shall make my sacrifice. Unto the goddess of the night. I shall make my sacrifice.
Angus Watson's Iron Age and Mitchell Hogan's Sorcery Ascendent Sequence are both ongoing fantasy series worth reading.
Hey there :)Welcome to the fantastic world of fantasy :D
I have to second a lot of the recommendations already given - here's my favorites:
Rothfuss - Name of the wind (absolutely beautiful prose)
Staveley - Emperors blades (3 POVs, so never boring)
Lynch - Locke Lamora (adventure with humor)
Sullivan - Theft of swords (even more humor, was read)
Sanderson - Mistborn or really anything else by him ;)
Butcher - Harry Dresden (funny urban fantasy)
Hearne - Hounded (like Dresden, with Irish druid!)
O'Malley - The rook (crazy, dark and dry humor)
Cartiger - Etiquette and Espionage (steam punk, funny, witty, girly - and I guarantee: No love triangle ;) )
SciFi
Pierce - Red rising
Scott Card - Enders Game
Cibola burns (#4 in the series, but also a good entry point)
Hey Amanda! Just saw your post and i'm sure there's 100 others I could suggest to you but the first one that came to mind was a new book called The Sentient, amazing read and it will definitely leave you begging for a sequel! Let me know what you think! The Sentient

I would also like to read some sci-fi, but I have no idea which ones are good books in that genre. I read a couple of Star Wars books, but that is all.
