Where does your name come from? What does it mean? You'll be surprised by what you might find! Everyone's name has an interesting origin.

What's yours?

Example:
Hi, my name is Trinity. It is derived from the Latin name 'Trinitas' meaning a group of three people or things. It is also known for meaning 'The Christian Godhead as one God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.'

Becky (booklovingcoffeeaddict) My given name is Rebecca, but I go by Becky. :-)

Since my dad is Richard S. Smith and I was a girl , they wanted me to have the same initials at least, so I am Rebecca S. Smith (maiden name).

message 14: by Sheila (new)

Sheila Read (sread40) | 22 comments my name Sheila (alternatively spelled Shelagh and Sheelagh) is a common given name for a female, derived from the Gaelic name Síle/Sìle, which is believed to be a Gaelic form of Cecilia. Like "Cecil" or "Cecilia", the name means "blind", from the Latin word caecus. There is also an etymologically-unrelated Indian name (alternatively spelled "Sheela"), which is rooted in the Sanskrit word शील (Sheela), meaning "character" or "good conduct" and is a common name across the country.

Sheila is also a colloquial term for a girl or woman in Australia and New Zealand.

message 17: by Beatrice (new)

Beatrice (beatricemasalunga) Beatrice (just referred it to Wikipedia)

- is a name derived from the Latin name Beatrix. It is a feminine form of the late Latin name Viator, which means "voyager, traveler". It was also a common name amongst early Christians, though the spelling was altered by association with the Latin beatus, meaning "blessed". The French form is Béatrice and the Spanish and Portuguese form is Beatriz. The popularity of the name spread because of Dante Alighieri's poetry about Beatrice Portinari.

So does this make me a Divergent too?

message 18: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) My name is Mara. It's Hebrew and means bittersweet (which matches my personality shockingly well!). It appears in The Bible twice: in the Book of Ruth, when Naomi changes her name to Mara, and in the Book of Exodus, when Moses sweetens the waters of a river. The reason I was named Mara, though, was because of an old book my dad owned called "I Name Thee Mara" which was about a schooner.

And my middle initial - A - stands for Anne, and I got it because that's my mom's middle name and she couldn't come up with anything better. ;)
