Thought I'd create a general topic for Green Group authors who have a novel or story addressing climate change as a central theme.

To kick it off: my local environmental organization was kind enough to interview me about climate change as the inspiration for Aquarius Rising: In the Tears of God. For those interested, the interview can be viewed here:

Great interview and very interesting premise for your novel. I will definitely check it out. My novel, A Mother's Right, also addresses climate change as a central issue (and we share the same Publisher).

Cool - it's nice to find another DDP author in the Green Group! I'll be checking out "A Mother's Right" for sure.

Just thought I'd share some good news. My debut novel (focused on climate change), Aquarius Rising: In the Tears of God, was named a finalist in the science fiction category of the 2014 EPIC eBook awards.

Even rookies catch a break sometimes! ;-)

Thought I'd share one more bit of good news about my debut novel, Aquarius Rising: In the Tears of God, which includes catastrophic climate change as a central theme. I just found out that it won the Science Fiction category for the 2014 EPIC eBook Awards.

Annis Pratt | 80 comments Is there a list of publishers who specialize in novels about the battle between self-sustaining folk and enemies greedy to degrade their lands? My adventure novel The Marshlanders and its sequel Fly Out of the Darkness are based on the draining of the East Anglian Fens

Luke Marsden (lukefdmarsden) | 4 comments Thanks for creating this thread, Brian. My novel, Wondering, the Way is Made, is set against a backdrop of serious climate change.

For those interested in the subject, there are some (fairly animated) discussions on climate change currently taking place in the following GR group threads:

Underground Knowledge group - Global Warming - is it real?
Science and Investigation group - Climate Change

Good suggestion for a topic, Brian.

My SF stories are set in an alternate future London and Dublin, when climate change is affecting lives but people use tech that is lighter on the environment, such as wearable solar panels to charge tablets and phones. The characters are just getting on with their lives while reports come in of islands being lost to sea level rise and more. I feel that in this way I can show the gravity of the situation without pushing it too hard.

Annis Pratt | 80 comments I was excited to read about your trilogy based on alternate worlds. Way to go: I think this is also called Speculative Fiction. My trilogy is based on the past, the draining of the East Anglian Fens, and my hero is - TADA! - Clare.

Whoo, thanks Annis!
I've recently read
The Edge of the World: How the North Sea Made Us Who We Are
The Edge of the World How the North Sea Made Us Who We Are by Michael Pye
and got part of your history, though the book looks much more strongly at the Netherlands being drained. Certainly it's a really interesting story and we can envisage how the lowlying lands could suffer from sea level rise.

message 15: by Annis (new)

Annis Pratt | 80 comments Dear Clare,
Actually, the English Merchant Adventurers financing the draining of the East Anglian Fens hired Dutch Engineers to do it for them. A significant link between two low-lying environments, I think, with significance for today.

Wanted to share that the 2nd book in my cli-fi trilogy, Aquarius Rising: Blood Tide, has just been released. (Book 1 wound up being cited as an example of the climate fiction sub-genre in the November 2014 issue of Australian Humanities Review, which still amazes this American small-town Midwesterner; digital delivery really breaks down the old geographic boundaries! ;-)

There's more info here for anyone interested: Blood Tide Released!.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

I know yours is an old post, but thought I would weigh in. there is a new genre for climate change novels: "cli-fi" isn't that great?
My WIP, "Green Valley" will be ready for submission to agents/publishers in about 6 weeks. and I'm looking for a good place to submit (preferably in the New England area). Any suggestions as this is a new genre for me (my other novels are all historical)?

Just wanted to share this: I'm thrilled and honored to be featured on the Eco-Fiction web site's Climate Change Author Spotlight. For those who aren't familiar with it, Eco-Fiction focuses on "Ecology in Literature and the Arts." Mary Woodbury (founder) has done a wonderful job of emphasizing the sub-genres of "eco-fiction" or "climate fiction" and spreading the word about the power and importance of this fictional category. Check the site out and browse around if you have time. I think the content there will resonate with members of this group!

I'm thrilled to contribute the short story "Snow Globe" to the latest release from World Weaver Press, Glass and Gardens: Solarpunk Winters. This is the sequel to WWP's earlier seminal contribution to the solarpunk subgenre, Glass and Gardens: Solarpunk Summers.

For those unfamiliar with the term, solarpunk presents a more optimistic vision of potential futures where we achieve some level of balance between the environment and technology, or even an elegant fusion of the two. I, for one, can use a bit of optimism when it comes to climate change and human adaptation to it!
