Kathryn (astroryn) | 2 comments What was the whole "Smoked her way through all five years of your pilot's career! / She never said! She never even hinted!" exchange between Maddie and Engel all about? Was it implying that Engle was collaborating with Julie more than she was letting on in her "confession"? Reference page 308.

I assume that it was Engel telling Maddie that she had been giving Julie cigarettes throughout. Of course Julie wouldn't have put it in the confession, it would have gotten Engel in trouble, and made the cigarettes go away.

Kathryn (astroryn) | 2 comments Oh ok, so more harmless than I thought.

Also, has anyone decided if the capitalized words throughout the confession are meant for emphasis or, in fact, code?

Miriam (3rdragon) | 14 comments You mean like "Absolutely Every Last Detail" or "SO EMBARRASSING"?

I would say it's just emphasis. You'll note that Maddie does it, too. (Page 274 of the British paperback, "But Julie, who is supposed to be here, has NO IDENTITY. I have got her FORGED IDENTITY DOCUMENTS.")

I've always thought that Engel and Julie got on much better than Julie let on in her confession. I assumed Engel was really the one who helped her get all the information about the hotel and organized the switch of the papers. Has anyone read Rose Under Fire yet? Engel talks about Julie in it and it makes me think they were much better "chums" than is let on because obviously Engel wouldn't have been able to keep doing what she was (I assume - helping Julie, giving her ciggys, etc, etc, etc..) if Julie was reporting it all 100% truthfully in her reports. And I don't think Julie leaving such a thing out in her writing would be very far-fetched because it's Julie, who, in case anyone has forgotten, made up 11 sets of wireless code and wrote a whole confession about the British War Effort with Absolutely Every Last Detail for the Gestapo and in the end, it was just the story of her and Maddie's friendship with no incriminating information at all.
