Alright - I liked Giles, and would have enjoyed learning more about him. Yes I know he was ruthless, and had his own agenda etc...but he intrigued me.....and he did start the Deathstalker legend.....so he can't be all bad!

I liked Giles to begin with, and I think I did like him at the end. But to put it frankly, some parts of him disturbed the crap out of me. Seriously.
I loved Giles - and yes he was disturbing, but I was like tell me more...how he came to be who he was, and why did he fall out with his son??? And also young Giles would be an entertaining yarn.....
When that part in Coda came - seeing little Giles - I just kind of burst into tears. It reminded me of the time when he sat next to the camp fire in War and talked if his long lost childhood - that moment was happy and sad and potent all at the same time. I should have expected Green would show us little Giles, but I didn't and it just kind of hit me over the head.
One thing I hated though - finding out that Hermione wasn't the proud, beautiful, cunning Empress I envisaged, but a scared, unloved teenager, married to someone much older. From that point on, I almost hated Giles for what he most likely did - manipulate her and them leave her to die, as she would have, I think, been starved for affection. A small part of me likes to think that Giles loved her truly and left her behind unwillingly, but I don't think that's likely. What do you think?
But you're right, Giles story (evidently) would be a good one. Green should totally write it. :) He doesn't seem to have trouble churning put books, why not one more?

Maybe Hermione grew into the role as empress over time? If Giles was just a kid at that point maybe later when he met her she had grown into a powerful woman from the pregnant teenager we see here?
I like the way you think Chris - that's how it should be.....I'm not sure if Giles would be capable of love in the way we would think of it - he's been through things that hardened him, and messed up relationship with his son...but I wonder...did he have only one son - or was it like one known heir, and there might have been more illegitimate deathstalkers running around???

True, too true... it's just that she seemed so helpless when we saw her, not to mention worn out. And I got a feeling that there wasn't really much of an Empress role to grow into - more that "Empress" was an interchangeable word with "Concubine" and "Heir-Bearer."
What you suggest is possible - but even if she did, do you have any doubt that Giles took advantage of her?

Giles would take advantage of anyone, for his own benefit.....and that makes me so want to read the adventures of young Giles to find out how he changes from the young boy to the fierce warrior....

:D I think there were probably some illegitimate little Deathstalkers wandering around, especially as the Boost hadn't come into play then.
I too wonder if Giles would be capable of proper love too - though when he briefly spoke to Dram of Dram's mother, I had to wonder if Giles loved her...
It's just the romanticist inside me hoping he knew some kind of true love, even if he was a bit of a bastard.

Totally. She probably took advantage of him! Poor innocent Giles, tricked and betrayed by a woman's manipulations

Second that. :)
(I am trying to keep up with the conversation here, I promise! :D)

Nuh-uh. :D Giles was too smart and manipulative himself to be taken advantage of, even by an Empress - and what would she have to gain? Besides, Hermione really didn't strike me as the manipulative type...

Possibly she changed over time. We really don't know much about that period. But yes, Giles was portrayed as the bad guy here.
Maybe Hermione changed....as you would when you become Empress aka baby producer???? And who knows, and this why a book on Giles would answer some of these questions - or even a book on Dram....just a little bit more of the Deathstalkers.....and I'm sure Owen or was it Giles makes an appearance in the Secret Histories.....oh my memory is shot.....too much exam revision....I'll go and check....
:D I know! ;) *puffing* "Must...keep...up...must...type...faster..." LOL.
Hey, a thought just struck me - do you think that Green was drawing parallels with the Princess Hermione in Greek Mythology? Or is that too subtle for Green? Not that he isn't subtle, just maybe not that type of subtle...

Ah hah - thanks to Wikipedia (where else.....)The Deathstalker clan has a connection to another fictional family, that of the vast Drood family in The Man With the Golden Torc and Daemons Are Forever. It appears that the Deathstalkers are direct descendants of the Droods although they seem unaware of this fact. It is unknown whether the Boost is one of the powers promised to the Droods by the strange matter, or whether it was developed independently
In reply to both of you: It is possible that she changed, but I just don't think she changed in the way that would allow her to be the manipulator in the peace - not matter what happened I think she'd still be looking for affection.
@Jaq: I think a book on Giles and Dram (in one, and with Hermione of course), would be a great addition to the Deathstalker Universe. *sigh* I want this non-existent book so badly now...

And also Wikipedia mentions Dram is the eldest son of Giles....so that suggests that there were other little Deathstalkers....

*bows down to Wikipedia* I could have spent more time looking for a more sophisticated site on Hermione, but I just couldn't be bothered - and besides, that would have put me even further behind in the conversation. LOL.
Thanks for the information on the Droods - that's really interesting!
So what do you think: Classical parallels with Princess Hermione, or complete coincidence? :)

Haha, I feel all smartical now I've made that connection...
It would be fantastic, I agree. What would you like to see in that book, specifically? :)

Death, destruction - you know the usual Deathstalker day in the life of....seriously the same humour, and also the adventure, thrills and spills...What about you? yes I'm back - last exam sat and I can concentrate on the important stuff now....hahahah
Haha. :) Um, I guess I'd like to see both Giles and Hermione's life, I'd like to see what happened with Dram, who his mother was, what happened to Hermione after Giles fled, the rebellion the Device was used on, more about the Darkvoid Device and the Wolfling.... Oooh, and seeing the first Hadenman Crusade might be fun too! :)
Have I missed anything? :D
Have I missed anything? :D
I'd also like to learn....whether Giles had more children...the reference to Dram is his oldest child....so maybe there was a family split at some stage?? And yes the first Crusade would be interesting...and also more on the planet of Shandrakor....And you're right a bit of the Giles and Hermione love/back story.......and Dram......
