I think the thing that makes me keep re-reading the stories is the relationship between Archie and Wolfe. As Wolfe says - it's miracle. It's a sexless marriage of sorts.

What is your favorite moment in their personal interactions?

Jeanie | 14 comments It was many books into the series before I developed any sort of attachment to wolfe--I loved Archie from the start. Eventually I found that I felt a complicated affection toward Wolfe and ittook a while before I realized I felt for Wolfe exactly as Archie did. I have great affection for Wolfe because Archie does.

There are so many moments--yeah, tering up the check was a good one--but I remember one where Archie wanted to go out but tried to fake out Wolfe with pretending not to really want to, but Wolfe spotted he hadchanged his shirt. Archie complained it was hard living with the world's greatest detective.

The only book with the word Orchid in the title is "Black Orchids". There is a book with the short story, "Omit Flowers" and another with a short story titled, "This Won't Kill you", otherwise, nothing matches your title. Any other clues? ;)

Robert Kettering | 9 comments Jeanie - Thanks very much for your reply, but I'm afraid my question was unclear. The "Orchids for you" phrase wasn't part of a title, but was spoken by one of Wolfe's clients (or a counselor to the client) - a humorously crass fellow who may have been in the public relations business. The phrase was spoken in the first few pages, when the client was trying to engage Wolfe's services. I just can't remember the title of the novel.

Oh, that explains it. I'll be on the lookout then. I'll post if I find it.

Robert Kettering | 9 comments Jeanie - Thanks. I read the book years ago, then my wife loaned it to a friend who lost it. Now no one can recall the title...a mystery about a mystery.

I think its the story about the guy who makes novelty items. He wants to have a talking orchid that says "Orchids for you." The story is Instead of Evidence.

Robert Kettering | 9 comments Sara - Thank you very much. I read the story over 20 years ago, but what you describe sounds right. I'll go to Amazon.com now and order it. Thanks again.
