I have the Simple Touch. I absolutely love it. I have a little clip on book light that works great if I want to read in the dark.
I use the simple touch without the glow light constantly. I have heard the light uses up the battery a lot faster. However, there are times I wish I had a light. Living in the country where storms cause power outages often, it would be nice. Also, my simple touch has a grey background. If I am sitting across from a soft reading light, my nook gets shadowy and hard to read unless I turn it just right.
I heard the same about the glow light. Using a clip on book light works like a charm. D, I've not had a problem with the e-ink. I love the no-glare.
I use a small clip in light with my simple touch. I use that at night in bed, so I don't disturb my husband while he's sleeping. I also prefer to read it "naked" (no case). But I still want protection. So I use a hard envelope style case that I can easily slip my nook in and out of.
I've had the original Nook, the Simple Touch, and the Simple Touch with Glow Light. I love my Simple Touch with Glow Light and use the light every night in bed. I read several hours every night--most of them without the light on (I just turn the light on when I get in bed, otherwise, I'm next to a lamp). I haven't had too much of a problem with the battery life but, I have to say, I charge it once a week whether it needs it or not.
It's wonderful having the light when on road trips or staying on the boat overnight. In the past, I've had trouble with clip-on lights being too bright when the surroundings are pitch black. You can set the glow light really low, so it's not so much of a problem.
I gave my father-in-law my Simple Touch and my husband still uses my original Nook when we travel. Neither of them read as much as I do and seem happy as can be with their respective Nooks. So, I'd say it really comes down to your life-style and preference. Having lived and commuted in NYC, I'd think you'd be happier with a lighter device. Whether you go with the light or not depends on how often you read in the dark... ;-)
I love my Simple Touch, but like another poster said, the background is kind of grey, so that can make it kind of shadowy if you're not reading in direct light. But that's true of some dead-tree books, too.According to the specs from B&N, the glow light cuts the battery life in half -- but that's only if you're actually using it all the time. The battery lasts for ~30 hours of use if you don't use the light at all, and ~15 hours if you use the light all the time. Still, 15 hours between charges is pretty darn good.
However, what concerns me about the glow lights is how many reviews there are saying that it developed a hole behind the screen that let light shine through. It seems like this is a pretty common problem. Some people have had trouble getting their Nook replaced after it developed that problem, too -- even though it's clearly a defect in the manufacturing. Because of that, I've decided I'd rather get a clip light than risk spending $120 on a new device that seems likely to develop a problem within the first couple of weeks.
I also have a Simple Touch Nook, I have debated on the one with the glow light, it seems so convenient to have the light included. I do use a book light when I am reading in the dark.Thera I love how that case looks, I also prefer to read my Nook "naked" I do have 3 Nooks, 1st Generation Nook, Simple Touch Nook and Nook HD. Love Nooks!!!!

I have an iPad so I don't need the tablet, so I've been looking at the simple touch. I am torn on whether to get it with or without the the glow light. Those of you that have the simple touch, what do you think is better? I noticed the one with the glow light had worse reviews then without.
